The Director of Indigenous Health will develop, build and inspire innovation in engagement of Indigenous communities and people, Indigenous Health programming and research collaborations for the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD).  This position will enhance and further develop the strategic plan for Indigenous Health programs including: 1) engaging and partnering with community leaders, community members and community agencies & organizations, 2) leading and developing education programming throughout the continuum of educational programs throughout the FoMD in collaboration with and meeting the needs of educational leads and, 3) providing strategic advice and input into development of relationships and programs in Indigenous Health research where appropriate.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide strategic leadership for the Indigenous Health Initiatives Program (IHIP) in the FoMD
    • Brief the Associate Dean & Division Director, Community Engagement regularly on the progress of initiatives, on trends and changes in Indigenous health education, and on issues of importance to Indigenous people and communities that concern the areas within the remit of the FoMD
    • Facilitate and advocate for inclusion of Indigenous Health into all appropriate FoMD policies and programs, that it is well developed and effectively implemented
    • Contribute to the expansion of programs by seeking program funding through the preparation and submission of operating grant applications and proposals to government and external funding agencies
    • Develop IHIP budgets for approval of Associate Dean
  • Maintain the day to day activities of the IHIP and supervise IHIP staff
    • Oversees completion of required reports and financial documents on the IHIP
    • Collaborate with other Directors in the Division of Community Engagement in areas of overlapping responsibility
    • Maintain and work within the approved IHIP budget and program funding
  • Develop and implement new initiatives and programs and maintain and support existing programs to meet the mission & goals of the IHIP, the Division of Community Engagement and through the Division those of the FoMD including but not limited to:
    • Increasing the number of graduates from programs of the FoMD who provide culturally safe care to Indigenous people
    • Increasing the number of graduates who choose career paths that serve Indigenous people and their communities
    • Supporting the Indigenous students currently in the programs of the FoMD
    • Increasing the cultural safety within the FoMD and its program through continuing professional development and faculty development initiatives
  • Lead the development of new and maintenance of existing relationships with Indigenous communities and organizations and act as the primary liaison between the FoMD and these Indigenous communities and organizations, including the development of teaching sites, where appropriate, in First Nations and Metis communities in collaboration with the Director, Office of Rural & Regional Health
  • Develop robust program evaluation to track results of IHIP initiatives and programs in collaboration with other Directors and Associate Dean, Community Engagement
  • For all activities of the IHIP, periodically review and confirm or revise, as appropriate, daily processes to maximize efficient and effective operation
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean & Division Director, Community Engagement

The successful candidate will possess a minimum of an Undergraduate degree in education, community development, social work, or other relevant discipline; Masters degree is preferred.  An additional requirement is five years of management experience with demonstrated experience in effective program development and staff management.

Required knowledge in the following:

  • Indigenous cultures, values and teachings
  • Familiarity with traditional healing practices
  • Current and emerging issues of importance to Indigenous people and communities
  • Indigenous and mainstream health education issues and trends
  • Cree language or one of the other common Indigenous languages in Alberta is an asset


Required skills and abilities include:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with Indigenous people, communities and community organizations
  • Ability to operationalize work plans from strategic objectives
  • Working knowledge of federal agencies with responsibility for Aboriginal Health and health education programs, Alberta Treaty Organizations, Aboriginal community agencies and organizations
  • Commitment to ongoing process improvement
  • Participate effectively as a member of the Division Leadership Group
  • Staff supervision
  • Ability to understand financial reports
  • Ability to accept constructive supervision and direction
  • Self-motivated, with a proactive approach to all duties
  • Ability to work well independently with limited supervision
  • Commitment to providing timely, efficient, exceptional service
  • Understand limits of independent actions
  • Conflict resolution and mediation skills
  • Experience in organizational aspects of medical education
  • Knowledge of relevant computer programs
  • Working knowledge of the policies and procedures of the University of Alberta, the FoMD and the Division of Community Engagement would be an asset


In accordance with the Sessional and Other Temporary Staff agreement, this position has an initial appointment of three years, with the possibility of extension, and offers a comprehensive benefits plan found at www.hrs.ualberta.ca and an annual salary range of $60,484 to $100,842. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
