Project

Reference: EngSci-ELM-128

Project Themes: Energy & Climate Change, Materials & Surface Engineering and Mechatronics, Signal Processing & Control

Organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskite solar cells, being one of the most intensively investigated optoelectronic materials, have attracted attention from an unprecedented number of researchers due to its ease of fabrication and rapidly improving efficiencies which have increased from a mere 3.81% to a verified efficiency of greater than 20% over the past few years. Yet, there are still several critical issues to be addressed before the mass production can be realised for this class of solar cell, which includes the development of environmentally-friendly lead-free perovskite, reliability in air and moisture, and the large area manufacturability for cost-effective production. Most of the current works on printable perovskite solar cells are either based on small scale devices, or focus on a single layer low-temperature approach. In this proposal, we will look into the scalability as well as the stability of perovskite solar cells while moving towards compatibility with large area processing. Process and material development will be at the core of this research to convert the current deposition of functional layers that employ a high-temperature annealing step (400 – 500 degC) to one that has low-temperature (150 degC and below) compatibility using state-of-the-art roll to roll manufacturing capability. This project is part of a collaboration between the University of Southampton and A*STAR Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech). The successful candidate will spend two years in Singapore and two years in Southampton, UK.

One PhD scholarship is available to strong candidates with British or EU citizenship.

The ideal candidate should have at least an excellent bachelor's degree in any field of engineering or applied sciences, and be proficient in English.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr Suan Hui Pu, Email: suanhui.pu@southampton.ac.uk
