Job Details

The School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences

The School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences includes the professional disciplines of Audiology, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, and Speech Pathology.  Undergraduate programs are available in Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech Pathology with graduate entry programs available in all disciplines.  Students gain supervised professional experience as part of their academic program and graduates are ready for immediate entry to their profession on completion of their degree.  Each of the undergraduate degree programs is of four years' duration and includes both preclinical and clinical study offered in an integrated way.  All of our programs place considerable emphasis on problem solving and diagnostic decision-making and students are guided in the processes of systematic and holistic assessment and the selection and effective implementation of management approaches.  Each discipline prepares students to operate within the health, education and related systems and to contribute meaningfully to teams.  There is an emphasis on interprofessional education and research in the school.

All disciplines within the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences are active in research and are making significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge in their professions. The School offers Research Higher Degree programs in all disciplines.

The Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (BOccThy) commenced in 1968 at UQ and was the first bachelor degree to be conferred in occupational therapy in Australia, having previously been offered as a diploma (since 1955) and earlier as part of the physiotherapy curricula (1945-1955). In 1976, a research masters program was introduced and occupational therapy at the University of Queensland continued its leadership in Australia by conferring the first occupational therapy-specific PhD in 1990 and being the first Australian university to appoint a professor in occupational therapy in the mid -1990s. In 2000, the Master of Occupational Therapy Studies (MOccThySt) commenced to allow graduates from other disciplines to complete the degree in two accelerated years, part of a strategy rolled out across the School to help meet the unmet demand for entry to the professional programs. Similar graduate entry programs (GEMS) are now commonly offered by a number of institutions across Australia. Continuing the strong research tradition, occupational therapy at UQ was one of the first programs in Australia to change the Bachelor program to a Bachelor Honours degree (2015).

There are currently two pathways to enter occupational therapy at UQ:

  • The Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours), 4 year program (64 units) with direct school leaver entry; and

  • The Master of Occupational Therapy Studies, an accelerated 2.5 year program including 5 semesters (40 units) for graduates with specific prerequisite studies.

In addition to these, the School also offers the following research programs:

  • Master of Philosophy, full time 1-2 years or part time equivalent. This requires a bachelor degree with honours class II or higher; and

  • Doctor of Philosophy, full time 3-4 years or part time equivalent. This requires a bachelor degree with honours class IIA or higher.

The mission of occupational therapy at the University is to promote the development of international leadership in expanding the scientific body of occupational therapy knowledge and experience, through research and other scholarly activities and the provision of excellent occupational therapy education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The aim of the occupational therapy programs at the University is to prepare graduates who are able to practice at an entry competence level in the profession, with a strong professional identity and critical research skills. The structures of the programs allow progressive development of knowledge, practical and clinical skills to underpin client-focused clinical reasoning and management in an evidence-based framework. As a member of a multi-disciplinary, health-enabling professional School and Faculty, interprofessional learning is also an important feature of the programs.

The University is a research intensive university, employing occupational therapists who are national and international leaders in occupational therapy education, clinical practice and/or research. The programs benefit from being delivered within this strong and vibrant research community where research informs teaching, staff value and engage in lifelong learning, reflection and peer review, and teamwork is a central theme. The curricula develop graduates who are therefore adaptable to changing environments and who are lifelong learners.

The role

This position offers a unique opportunity for an occupational therapy specialist to provide academic leadership in teaching and research engagement in their area of specialisation.  The appointee will be expected to take a leading role in the growth of the research capacity of the occupational therapy academics and to contribute to leadership roles within the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. A contribution to the scholarship of teaching is encouraged and engagement with the profession is expected.

The person

Applicants should possess a PhD or equivalent research higher degree in occupational therapy or a relevant related field, and must be eligible for registration with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia.  The School is seeking applicants of international repute, who can demonstrate their achievements in both teaching and research, with the latter including substantial publications in high impact journals, significant competitive grant funding, and a record of supervision of research higher degree students to completion. Experience in University-based teaching and learning and a highly developed level of leadership skills are required.  Applicants must also be able to establish and maintain collaborative links with industry, government and professional bodies.

Remuneration

This is a full time, continuing appointment at Academic Level E. An attractive remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
