Job Details

The University recognises that health research and education is an internationally competitive sector and to withstand changes in public funding and thrive in a rapidly changing environment requires a willingness to think and act beyond the status quo. The Dean of the School of the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) will therefore be required to develop ambitious strategies to build and further develop the performance and reputation of the School and respond to key challenges such as:

• The growing focus on impact, economic relevance and collaboration in research. In response we must continue to stay in tune with new research opportunities, increase grant income and develop key partnerships to help advance the overall ambition of the School.

• The increasing recognition of the global importance and relevance of health research. ScHARR has a very strong national reputation based on the reach and significance of its research and must now begin to extend its international impact.

• Major shifts in public funding for home and overseas students and an increasingly competitive international marketplace for our post graduate taught programmes require us to continue to develop the high quality of our teaching provision.

• We must maintain a highly motivated workforce to attract and retain globally-leading academics in an increasingly internationally competitive context.

This environment demands exceptional leadership, a global perspective and an ability to innovate for the benefit of the School and the wider community it exists to serve. Reporting to the Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health), the Dean is a member of the Faculty Executive Board and will be expected to forge strong links within the Faculty andwith colleagues across all disciplines at the University and in the NHS. The Dean will be expected to maintain, develop and contribute significantly to ScHARR’s outstanding reputation for research, teaching and knowledge transfer activities and to provide strong strategic and academic leadership for the next phase of the School’s future; leading the School to ensure it achieves the highest possible standards of excellence in all its activities.

The Dean will be required to exercise proactive vision and leadership in strategic and cultural development projects within the School and provide input to strategic discussions within the Faculty Executive Board. The Dean will be able to manage change and empower and delegate to others in order to deliver the agreed School strategy. The Dean is the Head of Department and will lead an Executive Committee, which in accordance with internal governance processes will act as a decision making body for relevant strategic and operational matters, in addition to determining and being responsible for the School’s contribution to the Faculty and University strategic plans. The Dean will be supported by the Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor, the School Executive Committee, the Faculty Executive Board and colleagues within the School, Faculty and Professional Services.
