Description:

A highly motivated candidate is sought to join the Protein Science group in the Department of Structural Chemistry and Chemical Biotechnologies. This group utilizes multidisciplinary approaches to understand protein structure, function, and dynamics of novel targets in preparation for their advancement into our drug discovery pipeline. The job requires the candidate to work in cross-functional teams to understand the cell culture needs of different functional areas and provide starting materials for recombinant protein purification. Specific projects will involve cross-functional collaborations across diverse therapeutic areas that target proteins and pathways in oncology, immunology, cardiometabolic diseases, infectious disease, and neuroscience. This is a basic research position that requires critical thinking, flexibility, multitasking, and the ability to bring in new technologies to enable expression of difficult to produce proteins.

Responsibilities:

- Contribute to Protein Science efforts in standard and high throughput expression screening and characterization of various recombinant protein targets including membrane proteins and multi-protein complexes to enable generation of high quality proteins for screening and structure determination.

- Independently perform experiments and manage routine cell maintenance activities with careful attention to detail and documentation.

- Work with CRO’s to outsource routine DNA production and protein expression work.

- Present data at team and group meetings.

- Excellent written and oral skills needed.

- Accomplish goals under project team timelines.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

- Qualified candidates will have a BS with 2-4 years or MS with 1-3 years in Biochemistry, Protein engineering, Molecular/Structural biology, Biophysics or equivalent education.

Basic Requirements:

- Preference will be given to candidates with technical expertise in microbial and eukaryotic cell culture, automated protein expression and cell culture strategies, VLP production, membrane preparation and protein characterization methodologies.

- Demonstrated proficiency in execution and troubleshooting of microbial and eukaryotic expression of recombinant proteins using traditional or Wave bioreactor and/or shake flask up to 10L scale required.

- Ability to operate, program and troubleshoot automated systems such as Tecan, Hamilton STAR or Biomek FX liquid handlers, Ambr microbioreactor and/or other integrated automated systems is highly preferred.

- Strong skills in use of computational tools for molecular biology, automation control, LIMS and database management

- Experience with analytical techniques such as SDS-PAGE, Western blot and LC-MS desired.

- Experience in protein biochemistry including but not limited to protein engineering and design, protein purification and biophysical characterization is a plus.

- The successful candidate must be highly organized, motivated, work independently in a collaborative team-oriented setting, and have strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
