Job Details

Applications are invited to join the Energy Engineering Group at the University of Sheffield to undertake major EPSRC funded research projects on carbon capture and combustion for power generations. The projects will investigate the heat transfer properties of industrial combustion furnaces using oxy-fuel combustion technology and ash related slagging and fouling problems of firing new fuels. The post will include principally computational modelling of combustion processes in large and small scale furnaces and research on developing advanced predictive tools for academic research and engineering applications.

You are expected to play a major role in managing and delivering relevant parts of the projects involved. In addition, you will carry out other duties that are appropriate to the post of a Research Associate at Sheffield, in particulate to provide support and supervision to less experienced researchers, and to actively explore new research areas and potentials for new research funding.

Applicants should have obtained a good first degree (or equivalent experience) in Mathematics, Physical Science, or Mechanical and/or Chemical Engineering, hold or be close to completion of a PhD (or have equivalent experience) in the subject area or a closely allied discipline, have a good knowledge and experience of using commercial CFD software FLUENT, a good knowledge and experience of solid fuel combustion theory and in particular ash depositions in industrial furnaces, and evidence of potential good research outputs. The successful applicant will be joining a team of world-leading researchers in computational modelling and experimental research on power plant combustion processes and ash related problems.

The post holder will report to Professor M Pourkashanian, within the Energy Engineering Group (http://www.shef.ac.uk/e2050) and is anticipated to play a leading role in the Group for ash related research.
