JOB PURPOSE:

To initiate, develop and manage high level research projects in line with the Institute’s research programme and to undertake the appropriate professional development and teaching activities that satisfy the criteria for an academic post within the University.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Develop research on the intersections of religion, culture, society and politics in Islam.
  • Develop research proposals and funding bids either solely or in collaboration with others including as principal investigator.
  • Negotiate and secure funding in research specialism to support self (and possibly a group of colleagues).
  • Sustain a personal research plan by initiating, managing and undertaking research activities in accordance with a specific project plan in the appropriate research team.
  • Sustain a high quality publication record by publishing in leading international refereed journals and/or monographs or edited
  • collections and by presenting at conferences.
  • Supervise, with academic staff, PhD students in their research programmes and student dissertations.
  • Mentor and develop research staff, where appropriate.
  • Contribute to the teaching and undertake associated tasks with own research specialism and be responsible for practical work where applicable, advising students or colleagues on techniques.
  • Contribute to the Institute’s outreach strategy by developing external links.
  • Develop links with relevant research groups, industries and external bodies to encourage knowledge exchange opportunities and/or create opportunities for future research projects. 1 Carry out designated administrative duties associated with the Institute.


Planning and Organising:

  • Plan for and set research objectives over a number of years. Plan for the use of research resources, and workshops, symposia, or conferences as appropriate.
  • Prepare research proposals for submission for external funding.


Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on professional development.
  • Assist other research fellows/assistants and support staff, as required, on research projects.
  • Manage own research, teaching and administrative demands under general supervision.
  • Monitor and ensure effective management of budgets allocated as part of the role.

 

 

 

 


Internal and External Relationships:

  • Member of Institute Board and committees, administrative or teaching duties.
  • Collaborate with other staff within the Institute and University.
  • Participate in and develop external networks, for example to identify sources of funding, generate income, obtain consultancy
  • projects, or build relationships for future activities.
  • Consider and strengthen the impact and public engagement of all research through a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Attend and contribute to relevant local, national and international meetings.

 


ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • A relevant 1 Honours Degree and a PhD completed in a subject related to Islam: Culture, Society and Politics.
  • Specific research expertise in global peace, security and justice in Islam.
  • Proven ability in authoring or co-authoring research grants targeted at Research Councils, EU, Charitable Trusts and
  • Foundations, government departments or equivalent funders.
  • Proven ability to secure external grants/contracts independently or as a collaborator in projects (from e.g. Research Councils,
  • EU, Charitable Trusts and Foundations, government departments or equivalent funders).
  • Ability to develop research on the intersections of religion, culture, society and politics in Islam.
  • Experience of participation in external research and practitioner networks, for example to develop a research programme or
  • consultancy projects, to build relationships for future activities and to identify appropriate sources of external funding.
  • Record of successful funded project management and ability to manage resources.
  • A sustained high quality publication record, with evidence of leadership, in world leading and internationally noted peer
  • reviewed/refereed journals/monographs or invited presentations that are REF returnable.
  • Ability to teach at PG levels within area of specialism.
  • Ability to contribute to the administration and management processes of the Institute.
  • Appropriate IT skills (familiarity with Microsoft suite, relevant electronic databases and software packages).
  • Ability to communicate complex information effectively.
  • Ability to work independently with a high level of self-motivation while working effectively as part of a wider team. Strong level of analytical capability.

 


DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Established reputation within subject specialism reflected in, for example, relevant national/international committee memberships and/or involvement in national/international research conferences and events.
  • Teaching and supervision experience within subject area.
  • Supervise research projects of postgraduate students.
  • Ability to contribute to the University’s outreach programmes by developing external links with a broad range of stakeholders nationally and internationally.
  • Ability to manage and motivate staff and to supervise a research team.
