Job Purpose

The Research Contracts Officer will as part of the team of contracts officers take responsibility for a broad case load of contracts relating in the most part to the University research work. This can range from charitable grants to multi-party collaboration agreements involving a number of partner organisations across the EU.

The postholder will be responsible for managing their own workload in accordance with team procedures. They will liaise with lead researchers, providing a consistently excellent support service to our academic community. Where appropriate they will also liaise with the University’s technology transfer company, Alta Innovations Ltd, to identify any potential valuable intellectual property which might result in the course of the research. Where necessary the post holder will liaise with governance and ethics colleagues to ensure the research is compliant with any appropriate regulations and has been subject to any necessary review. They will also liaise with the University accounts, procurement and treasury sections of the wider finance office to ensure the research work has been properly priced, procurement regulations are being observed and that the scope of the research is covered by the University’s insurance policies.

The contracts officer will negotiate directly with external parties such as research funders, sub-contractors and collaborators to obtain the best possible contractual terms for the University with regard to safeguarding intellectual property, minimising risks and liabilities to individual researchers and the University and ensuring regulatory compliance.

The post holder will be expected to organise and prioritise their own workload in response to requests from the academic community. They will use initiative to identify solutions to contractual problems as they arrive, developing suitable responses to new situations in this expanding and changing field.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Relevant degree
  • Demonstrated experience of drafting, negotiating and concluding a wide range and high volume of research contracts in the Higher Education or charity sectors
  • A clear understanding for the need and practice of customer focus and customer relationship skills whilst using tact, diplomacy and the ability to influence and persuade a broad range of individuals
  • Ability to prioritise and manage a large, complex workload, taking ownership of a variety of tasks, managing and responding to shifting priorities, progressing numerous projects at any one time to deliver exceptional customer service at all times


Desirable

  • Law degree OR significant experience in an equivalent role/job
  • Excellent working knowledge of key research contract related issued (e.g. intellectual property, publication, confidentiality, VAT, indemnities, liabilities)
  • Experience of identifying and managing risks associated with negotiation of a wide variety of research contracts including EU, clinical trials, strategic agreements etc.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • High level of competency and knowledge of standard software packages e.g. Word, Excel, Access
