Job Details

JOB PURPOSE:

To provide a technical support service to academic and research staff. The post holder will be working on a project to develop a novel model of bacterial biofilm growth. This will involve a wide range of techniques including bacterial culture, molecular biology techniques, infection models and in vivo imaging.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Set up standard equipment and experiments for research following a clear brief supplied by others.
  • Bacterial culture and cloning to insert fluorescent or bioluminescent reporter tags including preparation of buffers and agarose gels).
  • PCR typing on mouse strains and assisting with monitoring and record keeping of animals.
  • In vivo imaging infection.
  • Maintain accurate records of laboratory activities and experimental results.
  • Monitor levels of stocks/stores and ensure that equipment and work area are ready to use when required.
  • Provide technical assistance and demonstrate techniques to students and staff for research and teaching purposes as and when required.
  • Comply with Health and Safety procedures affecting self and others.
  • Carry out any other duties which are appropriate to the post as may be reasonably requested by Supervisors.


Planning and Organising:

  • Carry out a range of standard tasks, working within established procedures.
  • May prioritise duties within own work schedule, but refer to Supervisor for prioritising and scheduling of non standard work.


Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Have some responsibility for the security and routine maintenance of equipment in the laboratory /workshop/department. Provide some support student learning through the development and demonstration of standard equipment and techniques.


Internal and External Relationships:

  • Daily contact with Supervisor, work colleagues, University staff and students.
  • Some liaison with external consultants. Academic and/or vocational qualifications ie 5 GCSE’s A-C and/or NVQ level 2 in relevant subject (or equivalent).
  • 1 year’s relevant experience to include Microbiology research.


ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Working knowledge of relevant systems, equipment and processes.
  • Understanding of relevant regulations and procedures including Health and Safety requirements.
  • IT skills.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop and demonstrate standard equipment and techniques.
  • Ability to prioritise within own work schedule.
  • Problem solving skills.


DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Experience in molecular biology, animal research, home office license.
  • Ability to prepare data to publication standard.
