Building on the power of Keytruda, our breakthrough immuno-modulatory therapy for cancer patients, Merck has established the Oncology Discovery Team - a dedicated group of immunologists, cancer biologists and drug discovery experts, tasked with bringing innovative, important new therapies to patients who need them most. The Oncology Discovery Team combines the best features of a large pharmaceutical company (deep drug discovery expertise, ready access to clinical data, & extensive in-house capabilities) with the rapid decision-making and nimble structure of a biotech. We are seeking a highly qualified scientist with a strong background in Oncology and/or Immunology to join our Discovery Biology team in Boston. The successful candidate will have a track record of innovative and collaborative research. Primary responsibilities will include designing and carrying out experiments in the lab to build and support projects in the early discovery pipeline. An ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with colleagues in the discovery group as well as scientists from different disciplines will be essential.

The specific responsibilities of the candidate include but are not limited to:

- Design, conduct, interpret and report in vitro Oncology studies using a wide range of established methodologies.
- Develop new methods and protocols de novo when and where needed.
- Monitor, review and critically interpret published work to guide internal research
- Ensure data generated is communicated in a concise, easy to understand manner to the appropriate teams and stakeholders.
- Contribute scientifically to oncology drug discovery research programs, including identification and validation of novel targets.
- Collaborate with members from other functional areas, including medicinal chemistry, biologics, in vivo and in vitro pharmacology and translational sciences.
- Work with external academic, biotechnology, and contract research organizations.

Qualifications

Education:

- Master’s degree with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry or in an academic setting OR A BS with a minimum of 8 years’ industry experience

Required:

- Subject matter expertise in the biology of cancer and/or immunology.
- Deep technical and practical experience in cellular models of cancer and/or immunology.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including preparation of study reports, presentations and manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed scientific journals.
- Proven record of innovative thinking to propose and champion new ideas and solve problems.
- Demonstrated ability to thrive in a team environment.

Preferred:

- Experience in the isolation and characterization of immune cells from primary human and mouse tissues, and analysis of these cells for immune-related endpoints (proliferation, cytokine secretion, cell activation markers, cell activation marker analysis).
- 2D and 3D cell culture including soft agar, transfection of cells, generation of stable cells lines, application of siRNA, shRNA, CRISPR, drug treatment of cells in culture, medium throughput cell proliferation assays.
- Analysis of gene knockdown and small molecule effects on cells using immunoblot, immunofluorescence, FACS, immunopreciptiation, and ELISA.
- Ability to independently design and evaluate plasmid constructs, and measure of the deregulation of genes in cancer models using FISH, RNAscope, and qPCR.
- An understanding of therapeutic antibody discovery and development in the immuno-oncology space.
