Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Computer Systems and / or Control Systems

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University offers leading educational and research programmes in the fields of computer systems, control systems and telecommunications. A number of Senior Lecturer/Lecturer/Junior Lecturer posts have recently become available in the Department in these fields and the Department is therefore looking for excellent candidates to fill these positions. In these fields, the Department has well-established research laboratories as well as teaching and engineering infrastructures.

This is a permanent appointment. It is expected that those incumbents who do not have PhD qualifications and who are not yet registered for PhD studies, will enrol for PhD studies at Stellenbosch University.

Duties

  • Teaching and administration of general undergraduate modules and of specialised computer and/or control system undergraduate and postgraduate modules;
  • Supervising final year projects and postgraduate (Masters and PhD) students in the fields of computer and/or control systems;
  • Performing basic and/or applied research focused on relevant research areas within computer and/or control system engineering;
  • Collaborating with existing research partners within the Department and building contacts with other universities, industry and government organisations to promote research and development programmes in the computer and/or control system fields at Stellenbosch University;
  • Performing supporting, administrative and representative roles within and outside the Department.


Job Requirements

  • An applicable Bachelor's degree (such as BEng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, as required by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) to qualify for registration as a Professional Engineer;
  • An appropriate Master's degree (typically MEng or MScEng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or a Master's degree that has been upgraded to a PhD;
  • A PhD qualification, or  in an advanced stage of PhD study at an accredited national or international tertiary institution in the field of computer and/or control systems, or extensive and proven industry experience in the fields of computer and/or control systems;
  • The ability to communicate clearly and to teach courses and modules as described under duties above;
  • A solid knowledge of and experience in the field of computer and/or control systems;
  • A proven and relevant publication record in the computer and/or control fields in international peer-reviewed journals and/or conference proceedings, or extensive and proven industry experience in the fields of computer and/or control systems.


Recommendation

  • Suitable industry experience;
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer or compliance with criteria for registration;
  • Previous tertiary teaching experience, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Ability to function in a multidisciplinary environment;
  • A proven record of ability to obtain external funding for research.
