Description:

The Wits Department of Forensic Medicine and Pathology, Faculty of Health Sciences, invites suitably qualified scientists or health professionals interested in being part of a dynamic, growing academic department, to apply for the post.

Education, Training or Experience

  • BSc Degree and (Forensic) Science Masters Degree or MBBCh MMed Degree.
  • PhD Degree in Science will be an advantage
  • At least three years' experience in a Forensic Science and/or Academic University environment
  • Excellent command of the English language, both written and spoken.
  • Excellent computer literacy (Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook). 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills which will contribute to the promotion and development of the Department within the University

  • Good administrative skills with working knowledge of University/Academic Research Office and Human Research Ethics procedures.

  • Good interpersonal skills, tactful, respectful and non-judgmental and punctual.

 

Abilities, qualifications or experience that would be an advantage in your application

  • Experience in health sciences research supervision and coordination
  • A postgraduate qualification in health sciences education
  • An ability to speak  two or more (includes English) of the eleven official South African languages

 

Location

Johannesburg Forensic Pathology Service Mortuary Facility and Wits Medical School, Parktown, Johannesburg

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

  • To continue developing, coordinating and managing the Honours, Masters and MMed in Forensic Sciences, Medicine and Pathology courses within the Department of Forensic Medicine and Pathology.
  • To continue managing and coordinating the relevant Forensic Sciences, Medicine and Pathology research projects within the Department of Forensic Medicine and Pathology.
  • To continue developing and determining the course content in consultation with the Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine & Pathology.
  • The role will require someone with excellent ‘people skills’ and the ability to mentor and guide postgraduate students and colleagues, through their research endeavours.

 

KEY FUNCTIONS:

The incumbent will be expected to:

  • set and meet performance targets for efficiency and quality;
  • manage the daily running of all research projects and courses in the Department;
  • liaise with supervisors, team leaders, managers and third parties to gather information and resolve issues;
  • maintain up-to-date knowledge of University developments in postgraduate research;
  • serve on relevant Departmental, Faculty and University committees;
  • identify training needs and plan training sessions;
  • develop and/or maintain computerised records management systems to store or process health data and to record annual case-mix and research project data, as well as student data and prepare quarterly reports;
  • support and encourage scientific publications in the Department;
  • handle student and staff complaints or enquiries on research matters;
  • support students and staff in research endeavours including coordination and provision of supervision, administrative processes and technical assistance where relevant;
  • provide relevant academic administrative support to the Department and obtaining quotes for relevant equipment or items, as and when necessary;
  • perform any other tasks or activities which fall within the general functioning of the Department as determined by the Head of Department;
  • participate in the development of productive links with external organisations to secure potential income-generating opportunities.
