Research Assistant, Department of Molecular Medicine and Pathology, School of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.

Applications are invited for a research assistant in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, at the University of Auckland. New Zealand has a major obesity and type 2 diabetes problem. You will be joining a multi-disciplinary research group that is interested in understand the factors underlying the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes. You will primarily work to design and implement a study that aims to measure metabolic factors and body composition in school children, and may contribute to more molecular based laboratory research. This position is 1 FTE for 24 months, starting October/November 2016.

Reporting to and working under the supervision of the Principal and Associate Investigators, you will be primarily responsible for: Writing ethics application; recruiting and liaising with schools; consulting with Māori and Pacific Island communities; establishing study data collection protocols; organising, co-ordinating and conducting the study; data management and analysis, and being involved in the general running of the laboratory which may include some animal and molecular biology work.

We are looking for a versatile individual who can be involved in the management and implementation of human research projects. It is essential that the successful candidate has had hands on applied human/clinical type research experience in New Zealand. The ideal candidate for this position would have experience in developing, organising, and conducting research in a health-related field, and a postgraduate research qualification (e.g. Honours or Masters) in a relevant area. Familiarity with animal models and molecular biology techniques is desirable but not a requirement. You will be capable of working independently and as part of a small multi-disciplinary team. This position will involve local travel.

The position is based at the University of Auckland’s Grafton Campus in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.
