Job Purpose

To contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within an EPSRC funded project (Novel implant design and manufacture with embedded therapeutics – NIDMET). The ultimate aim of this project is to explore the added value that additive manufacturing may bring to orthopaedics and maxillofacial implants. This will be achieved by geometrically modifying stand implants so that a secondary material loaded with a therapeutic agent may be incorporated into the structure and release its payload into the surrounding tissue.

The successful candidate will be required to deliver two work packages within this project. These are focused on: 1) computational modelling, including finite element analysis, of geometrically modified orthopaedic and maxillofacial implants, and 2) static and dynamic mechanical testing of additively manufactured parts/implants. Prior experience in these experimental areas will be an advantage.

Person Specification

  • • First degree in a physical science or engineering subject and, a strong interest in multidisciplinary science.
  • • High level analytical capability and experience of structural modelling using Simpleware or similar.
  • • Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
  • • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively.
  • • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
