Global Vaccine and Biologics Commercialization (GVBC) organization within Merck Manufacturing Division (MMD) is responsible for the commercialization of biological processes (novel therapeutic proteins and follow-on biologics) and also secondary metabolite processes from Phase III through launch and technology transfer to supply.  Activities include process screening and characterization, scale-up and optimization, interfacing with a network of facilities for product manufacturing, facility fit activities, validation and regulatory filing documentation.

Under the general scientific and administrative direction of the Director in Upstream Processing in Biologics and Process Development (BPDC) group and working in conjunction with internal and external partners, this individual will support late stage bulk process development, characterization, technology transfer, clinical manufacturing, and validation studies associated with the development and implementation of fermentation processes, systems and facilities.  The candidate will also support commercialization space in terms of project management, regulatory filing and management of associated business systems.

Responsibilities:

- Participates in late stage process development, characterization, qualification and validation with line-of-sight for licensure and commercialization.  Primary focus will be on upstream processing, but with an understanding of the various aspects of product commercialization.

- Providing hands-on support for biologics process development in the form of data analysis, troubleshooting, problem-solving, report writing

- Learning new processes and procedures.

- Helps to manage supply, facilities, equipment and safety aspects of a facility and operations.

- Support authoring technical documentation

- Ensures that process/product are developed and documented according to standard Merck practices.

- Actively interacts with internal and external counterparts.

- Sharing the results of research with colleagues through presentations or discussions at team meetings; preparing presentations and delivering these at national and international scientific conferences;

- Skills in writing documents for filing, manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Qualifications

Education:

- BS in Biological Sciences/Chemical Engineering/Biological Engineering/Chemistry

Required Experience:

- BS with a minimum of one year of relevant technical experience

- Working knowledge or experience in cell culture/fermentation process including laboratory skills in basic microbiological techniques, shake flask and bioreactor experimentation, and broth clarification

- Excellent academic record

- Strong verbal and written communication skills, team skills, personal character, and ethics

- Strong problem solving skills and a hands-on approach to problem solving, with a bias towards going to see problems for oneself in the field.

Preferred Experience:  

- Experience in microbial culture, bioreactor operation and experimentation, harvest and primary recovery (including centrifugation and depth filtration)

- Experience in the manufacture of biological molecules at the pilot- and/or commercial-scale

- Prior experience in late stage fermentation process development, process characterization, batch record reviews, authoring regulatory sections or working with external contract organizations for development and or manufacturing is preferable

- Working knowledge of cGMPs
