Job Details
The research group Molecular Virology conducts research in the infectious disease area with a main focus on HIV/AIDS. Our recent efforts and publications center around elucidating molecular properties of HIV responsible for disease progression and antiviral control, and is extending towards the understanding of mechanisms involved in viral eradication.
A second effort are collaborations with clinical research groups in rural African settings, where we establish critical laboratory tools and jointly conduct clinical studies towards improving the public health situation. The project stands in the broader context of a successful implementation of the 90-90-90 UNAIDS goals for HIV by the year 2020 in a challenging setting in Lesotho. The project depends on the close collaboration with the highly motivated Lesotho-team, involved in establishing the brand-new cohort of HIV-infected individuals.
The work combines state-of-the-art molecular biology work and clinical research and diagnostic services close to the patient. Our project has identified major gaps in the available laboratory skills, the diagnostic capabilities, and the full understanding of critical reasons, why therapies fail among HIV-positive patients in rural settings and in younger age groups.

Your responsibilities
- The molecular characterization of HIV-1 field isolates and studies of the viral evolution over time in the patient, including those between mother and child.
- HIV resistance analysis by Sanger sequencing and NGS,
- molecular virus cloning and phenotypic profiling of therapy-relevant properties and possibly links to the cellular tropism of HIV.
- The work will be a reflection of the clinical determinants of therapy failure or success, and thus the candidate will have the opportunity to be actively involved in the design of new clinical studies and trials in Lesotho.
Your profile
We are looking for a motivated PhD candidate with a completed Master's degree in Biology/Medicine, who provides good hands-on expertise in the modern molecular laboratory techniques. Good knowledge of data management and statistical methodologies is of great advantage.
The successful candidate is a team player, dedicated to the challenging tasks in Basel and willing to spend time also in Butha-Buthe, Lesotho, for advancing our project collaboration and for training purposes.
Primary language of the group is English.
The position is funded for 3 years; an extension can be negotiated.
Please send your complete application (including motivation letter, CV, diploma, letters of reference, and contact info of two references) to:
