The Technologies in Education - Support & Solutions’ Education Learning Commons (ELC) provides an ideal learning environment for students, faculty, instructors and staff in the Faculty of Education to develop their critical digital literacies in the areas of teaching, learning, research and administration. Reporting to the Learning Consultant, the Technology Coach works closely with all members of the Technologies in Education, as well as students, professors, and Faculty of Education staff.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate flexibility, strong organizational skills and be able to prioritize workload in order to deal with changing priorities. Strong problem solving skills are required. Using excellent communication skills combined with a commitment to client service will provide a solid foundation for this role. The Technology Coach will be comfortable teaching and public speaking in front of groups of 1-50 people. Also, demonstrating confidence with a positive and professional approach are important competencies. The Technology Coach position will allow you to demonstrate your knowledge and passion for technology as it relates to education.

Applicants must be available during the entirety of the Fall 2016 and Winter 2017 semesters. In addition, applicants from within the Faculty of Education must have completed the EDU 210 course (formerly EDIT 202) and indicate when they are taking or have taken IFX/AFX. Preference will be given to University of Alberta students.

Duties

  • Provide exceptional customer service to all clients
  • Responds to patrons in the Education Learning Commons, including:
    • Clarify what is needed and ensure the person leaves with needs met
    • Refer or direct people to internal as well as external resources, as necessary
  • Supports the patrons of the Education Learning Commons:
    • Provide troubleshooting for the wide variety of hardware and software located in the Education Learning Commons (ELC)
    • Support students with a wide variety of technology required for the completion of assignments
    • Provide tutoring on the use of the ELC technologies
    • Facilitate the learning and development of each patron of the ELC
    • Have a basic familiarity of all customized program assignment
    • Provide video/audio recording and editing services as requested
    • Supervise use of the ELC
  • Maintains accurate records and documentation of interactions
  • Develops learning resources as requested such as tutorials and tip sheets
  • Tests and learns new technologies as they become available
  • Participates on Project Teams as required; project work may include supporting eClass development, course delivery, faculty websites and research projects
    • Monitors project list available online
    • Selects and manages project pieces that fit with schedule


Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will be currently enrolled in a Bachelor or Masters of Education, SLIS program or Masters of Humanities Computing; other faculties are welcome to apply as equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered; minimum High School Diploma
  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Experience as an instructor in an educational context
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to problem solve and show initiative in the workplace
  • A demonstrated interest in and an affinity for educational technology
  • Basic familiarity with Mac and Windows operating systems, printing, scanning, etc
  • Experience with and proficiency in the following is an asset:
    • Google Apps (Docs, Sheets, Forms, etc)
    • Web 2.0 tools
    • SMART board technology
    • eClass (Moodle)
    • Audio and video recording and editing
    • MS Office suite
