A research fellow is required to work in the Sustainable Energy Research Group on “IMPETUS: Improving Predictions of Drought for User Decision-Making”, an interdisciplinary domestic water demand modelling analysis project until December 2017.  The project is developing an agent-based microsimulation approach to the modelling of domestic water demand under a number of scenarios, including prolonged drought.

The project is funded through NERC’s UK Droughts and Water Scarcity programme and is collaboration between the Universities of Southampton, Reading (lead), Oxford and Newcastle along with the British Geological Survey and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.

This role will involve

  • Consolidating an existing review of water demand modelling approaches;
  • The further development of a preliminary ‘domestic water consumption microsimulation model’ using survey and other data;
  • Collaboration with the PI (Dr Ben Anderson) to develop spatial demand estimates for selected catchment areas;
  • Close collaboration with other project partners to integrate the results of these model(s) into a project wide integrated drought modelling framework;
  • Substantial contributions to internal and external dissemination of results through stakeholder workshops, papers, presentations, journal articles and media activities.

The work will be performed at the University of Southampton but regular project-related travel in the South East and London will be expected together with attendance at national and international conferences and events as appropriate. The project will be interdisciplinary and will involve close collaboration with non-academic project partners and substantial exposure to policy and strategy fora.

Applicants should have:

  • A PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in quantitative data analysis or modelling
  • Experience of developing microsimulation (or similar) models
