RESEARCH PROJECT ASSISTANT: (AD 11)

ONE YEAR CONTRACT

The Wits School of Public Health (WSPH) seeks to appoint a research project assistant with project management and problem-solving skills to coordinate and assist with the implementation of two health systems research projects, one focusing on health systems performance at the district level, and the other on the human resources for health. The person will work closely with the Head of School, and the academic leader of the LESEDI (leadership and governance, social exclusion and universal coverage, and utilisation of information at a district level).

Key responsibilities

  • Ensure overall coordination of the two research projects and provide general administrative support
  • Assist with fieldwork logistics and the actual execution of research fieldwork (e.g. setting up and conducting interviews, questionnaire administration, etc.)
  • Convene meetings, liaise and communicate with partners in the university, government and community-based organisations
  • Provide secretarial support to the research project team, including the organisation of various  meetings, booking of venues and audio visual equipment, keeping project meeting minutes  and  that all matters pertaining to the two research projects are dealt with efficiently
  • Assist in project planning to implement the research goals and objectives
  • Assist with monitoring and reporting of financial expenditure
  • Provide support to the research team with the development and preparation of technical reports and project and status reports
  • Liaise with School and University Support Services on financial, human resource and procurement issues.

 

Qualifications and experience:

  • A 3 year relevant diploma or degree or equivalent is a minimum requirement, preferably in a project or public sector management field and practical experience
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Strong administrative and computer literacy skills
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced multi-tasking environment and to pay attention to detail
  • Well organised, problem-solver, with sound time-management skills.
  • Intellectual and personal integrity, a professional work ethic, and a willingness to work according to deadlines and under pressure
  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to work in a team and to work with and manage people from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience of working with donor-funded projects and in a research or academic  environment will be an added advantage
  • Knowledge and experience with the Wits/Wits Health Consortium  administrative and financial systems, including Oracle will be an advantage
  • Please note that if shortlisted, applicants will be expected to do a task-based exercise as part of the interviewing process.
