Acquisitions Editor/Senior Acquisitions Editor, Professional Tech Content​

POSITION SUMMARY

The Acquisitions Editor/Senior Acquisitions Editor, Professional Tech Content is responsible for the acquisition and the ongoing management of a portfolio of books/ebooks in a field within professional computing/ information technology and related areas: for this position that field is our Microsoft line. Titles acquired by the Senior Editor should be of consistently high quality and in line with Apress' reputation as a high-quality publisher of computing, IT and technical works. The position involves extensive author contact via phone, email and in person, as well as: proposal review, contract negotiation, acquisition of manuscripts for production, development of the manuscript to meet Apress standards, promotional planning and long-range planning for growth and development of the program assigned to the Acquisitions Editor. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Manage a book portfolio of approximately 25-35 titles per year, and may be involved in the development of videos in the Microsoft field.

  • People management of one or two editorial staff reporting into him/ her; responsible for the day-to-day coaching and management of these direct reports.

  • Pursue an active and efficient acquisitions policy through correspondence, required meetings/trips, telephone, consultations with advisors, etc. Approximately 20%‑30% travel may be required, as well as strong initiative and independent functioning.

  • Prepare and execute publishing contracts.

  • Work with authors to assure timely delivery of the book manuscripts.

  • Maintain and develop a network of tech reviewers and advisors that can be called upon for advice and reviews.

  • Maintain continuous cooperation and dialogues with marketing, promotion and production concerning individual projects as well as general questions of mutual interest.

  • Maintain communication and a strong working relationship with editorial counterparts in the US, the UK and in India about specific immediate questions as well as long‑term strategy questions. Works with various branches in coordination of the international program.

  • Develop guidelines, plans, reporting systems, etc., to implement publishing plans maintains current status of all projects and manages planned publication dates.

  • Review and discuss new projects and plans with editorial colleagues particularly in overlapping areas.

  • Any other duties as required by manager.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • College degree, a degree in computer science a plus.

  • Strong affinity with and a natural interest in the tech industry: must be following industry developments closely.

  • Experience as an acquisitions editor or related editorial/publishing experience, ideally in tech or computer science publishing.

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills required.

  • Must be willing and able to travel.
