JOB PURPOSE:

The post will entail designing and conducting qualitative data segment of studies on ocular conditions being carried out in collaboration between QUB and the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centre (China) and with the NHS of Northern Ireland. The post holder will be required to effectively communicate in oral and written English; have experience conducting multidisciplinary research in LMICs and other resource poor settings; and be familiar with mixed-methods study design and training students and staff in relevant research methods.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • To design, manage, and conduct the qualitative component of a suite of eye health trials being conducted in rural China and projects in Northern Ireland.
  • To assist in developing a detailed project plan for the research.
  • To liaise with colleagues in China and Northern Ireland on the design of protocols and forms for the qualitative data collection.
  • To work with other members of the team at QUB, in China, and N.I. NHS to plan and develop future grant applications that will include ethnographic/qualitative data collection and analyses.
  • To assist with the preparation of scientific manuscripts and donor reports on the above.
  • To assist with the supervision of doctoral students.
  • To assist with ethical and research governance procedures in relation to these studies.
  • To ensure adherence to project milestones and timelines.
  • To draft and present regular progress reports for research teams and/or external audiences.
  • To assist with dissemination of research findings in oral and written format.
  • To prepare, in consultation with the research team, material for publication in national and international journals and presentations at national and international conferences. To carry out routine administrative tasks associated with the research projects to ensure they are completed on time and within
  • budget, including organising project meetings and documentation, financial control, and risk assessment of research activities. To read academic papers, journals and textbooks to keep abreast of developments in own specialty area and related disciplines.


Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • To ensure research resources are used in an effective and efficient manner.
  • To provide support and guidance as required to staff and students assisting with the research.

 


Internal and External Relationships:

  • To liaise on a regular basis with colleagues, students and key stakeholders. To maintain existing and establish new internal contacts.
  • To participate in internal networks for the exchange of information.
  • To form relationships for future collaboration.

 


ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Have a PhD in anthropology related to health service delivery and mixed-methods study design, and/or in a discipline relevant to
  • required professional practice (public health, translation or health services delivery research).
  • Master’s Degree in global public health.
  • At least 3 years’ recent experience in public health and/or translational research using mixed-methods study design.
  • Sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in research methods and techniques pertinent to public health intervention research.
  • Experience using relevant data analysis packages such as SPSS and N.Vivo Experience with managing and coordinating multidisciplinary research teams in LMICs and other resource poor settings.
  • Experience training students and colleagues in qualitative and mixed-methods data collection/analysis techniques.
  • Experience writing research protocols and ethics boards submissions.
  • Proven ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment as part of a research team.
  • Good publication track record commensurate with the stage of career.
  • Experience designing and carrying out health services research with multidisciplinary teams in LMIC settings.
  • Experience obtaining ethics approval from institutional review boards or ethics review boards.
  • Excellent IT skills (e.g. Microsoft Office suite).
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of ability to produce research protocols, data collection instruments, ethics board applications, and written reports.
  • Evidence of ability to meet deadlines within budgetary targets.
  • Evidence of ability to deal competently with administrative tasks and contribute to broader management tasks. Clear and confident communicator. Ability to give formal presentations.
  • Ability to work independently and on own initiative.
  • Ability to act decisively and confidently.
  • Ability to adapt to new working / living conditions based on prior experience in LMIC.
  • Experience working on multidisciplinary research teams.
  • Experience working on time-sensitive research projects.
  • Willingness to travel to meet the needs of the post.
  • Willingness to work outside normal hours, when necessary.

 


DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • PhD in relevant subfield of anthropology (medical or cultural).
  • Masters in another relevant field (sociology, psychology).
  • Knowledge of relevant methodological literature.
  • Experience designing and conducting research studies based on the principles of participatory action research (PAR).
  • Experience undertaking a range of community engagement, outreach and dissemination activities.
  • Proven ability to participate in and/or initiate collaborative research.
  • Evidence of having co-ordinated one or more research projects to successful completion. Experience offering methodological workshops and 1-on-1 mentoring to team members needing to learn or upgrade qualitative research skills.
  • Experience disseminating research to non-academic audiences.
  • Strong commitment to a career in research.
