Salary:  £20,046 Per annum

Full Time Fixed Term up to 12 months

Research and Innovation Services (RIS) delivers a range of services, which support academic, and research staff at the University of Southampton fulfil their research and enterprise objectives. This includes provision of advice on intellectual property, commercial contract negotiation, company formation, regulatory compliance and the development of policies applicable to research and enterprise.

The Internship will be for a period of up to 12 months. This post is to give an opportunity for a graduate seeking a career in the law with valuable work experience under the guidance of the Head of IP, Contracts & Policy who is also a qualified lawyer. Mentorship will also be provided from experienced members of the team, which include; contracts specialists, IP manager and technology transfer managers. This will provide you with the opportunity to develop your personal and legal skills in a commercially facing team with a specialty focus in supporting the innovation and exploitation of University research. 

During the Internship, you will undertake a number of selected projects, which may include legal research, development of guidance and policy, and supporting on contract and licensing negotiations. 

This role would be ideally suited to you if you have an interest in intellectual property and innovation and are looking for relevant work experience prior to commencing your training contract elsewhere and/or to help enhance your CV thereby facilitating a successful application for a training contract in the future. Unfortunately, this is not a training contract and there is not a prospect of a training contract within RIS at the end of the Internship.

You will have a good degree in law or have successfully obtained another legal qualification such as the legal conversion course or legal practice course, be a self-starter and capable of setting your own work strategies on a number of different tasks, often with tight deadlines. You will have excellent written, presentation and verbal skills, with the ability to communicate at a variety of levels including senior managers. An attention to detail is important, as is an ability to apply legal reasoning in order to develop to guidance. You will need to be able to provide simple yet clear guidance on sometimes-complex legal matters and to undertake effective analysis of issues in order to provide pragmatic solutions. Some office or legal work experience is also required.
