Research Technologist

The Research Technologist supports The Applied Genomics Core (TAGC) services and the development of cutting-edge Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) applications for research, including nucleic acid capture, ChIP-seq, RNA-seq and detection of DNA modifications.

Duties

  • Responsible for sample preparation, primarily related to NGS library generation from nucleic acid (DNA, RNA, cDNA), with samples provided by clients 
  • Performs several common molecular biology techniques including PCR, RT-PCR, cDNA preparation, restriction digests, and DNA sequencing
  • Performs quality assessment, sample analysis and sequencing for processes including Sanger sequencing, genotyping assays and NGS projects 
  • Provides technical assistance to the Manager and other TAGC staff as required during the development phase of TAGC client projects
  • Provides training and technical assistance to clients
  • Provides project coordination on several projects through assisting with project design, project development and tracking, and identifying problems arising for further discussion
  • Presents data and changes to service at regular laboratory meetings
  • Works with other TAGC staff to ensure a safe, secure, and clean laboratory environment by adhering to EHS guidelines
  • Assists with slide and poster presentations to highlight TAGC services (Microsoft PowerPoint)
  • Ensures accurate and timely record keeping (eg Laboratory book, Microsoft Word and Excel)
  • Performs required system maintenance on service platforms, including reagent inventory checks 
  • Performs other activities as required


Qualifications

  • MSc in Molecular Genetics, Microbiology or Biochemistry preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered; minimum completion of post-secondary education in a related discipline
  • 1 to 2 years of laboratory experience
  • Basic understanding of the Illumina NGS technology is an asset
  • Knowledge of iLAB solutions for service management is an asset
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
  • Ability to multitask and successfully meet deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Enthusiasm for technological challenges
