The Global Medical Leader (GML) is accountable for the leadership, strategic planning and all activities of the International Medical Leader (IML) organization. This is a headquarter based position.

- Provides management of the medical affairs planning activities for all oncology product(s) and indications across regions in Oncology Global Medical Affairs (OGMA) including, but not limited to, scientific evidence generation and scientific information exchange with all key stakeholders for Oncology.

- Provides structure and oversight to the medical affairs plans and local data generation process spanning R&D programs, outcomes research, post-registration company-sponsored studies and areas of interest for the investigator-initiated study program.

- Leads the team of IMLs that supervise the Regional Directors of Medical Affairs and US Medical Affairs Strategy Leaders who develop and execute medical affairs plans in the regions and give direction for country medical affairs activities.

- Partners with OGMA Regional Leadership, Commercial and Merck Research Laboratories (MRL) to define overall strategies and global development plans for oncology, inform all major stakeholders of unmet needs and facilitate appropriate approaches to address them.

Primary Activities:

Lead the IML team in the development of Oncology Medical Goals and Strategies that provide a value proposition, and address insights from affiliates and regions, and clinical and value evidence gaps.

In innovative ways, lead the strategy and process to translate these Goals and Strategies into research, data analysis, scientific communication, educational, and other tactics and solutions that improve patient outcomes and enhance access

Lead annual medical affairs plans & long range planning for the IML team work, working with the OGMA Head, OGMA Regional Leaders, Commercial and MRL to define global franchise strategies and global development plans.

Lead local data generation planning and advise on areas of interest for the Investigator-Initiated Study Program.

Communicate both scientific and business needs credibly and effectively across a variety of internal and external stakeholders at all levels

Demonstrate influence in external scientific community be it through peer-to-peer interactions, research and educational collaborations, publications, or other

Lead global expert input seeking programs as needed

Participate in and contribute significantly to professional organizations, academic or regulatory working teams

Successfully collaborate and lead resolution of Regulatory, Reputational (ie Public Relations), Compliance and other issues management

Model and manage for inclusive and collaborative leadership cross-functionally in Oncology Global Medical Affairs Teams, US/Regional Medical Affairs Teams and day-to-day work

Manage International Medical Leaders and Regional Directors Medical Affairs to be fully dedicated to the needs of Oncology

Lead talent review process and demonstrate follow through on Development Plans for Key Talent

Create action plans to ensure healthy succession pools for leadership positions within the IML team and Oncology Global Medical Affairs

Manage talent across variety of cultures, languages and backgrounds




Required: MD with experience in Medical Oncology

Required Experience:

- Strong judgment, prioritization and decision-making skills with the ability to understand how decisions fit into the broader context of corporate strategies

Demonstrated ability to motivate, mentor, manage and provide clear, unambiguous expectations and priorities for the team – of own staff or through networks. Comfort and confidence in working with diverse teams and backgrounds

In a matrix environment, able to effectively collaborate with and influence partners across divisions; can collaborate with others to resolve conflicts across organizations.

- Excellent interpersonal, analytical, communication (written as well as oral), in addition to results oriented project management skills

30% Travel

Preferred Experience:

Minimum of (8) years Pharmaceutical (or related) Industry experience in the global arena with proven track record of contribution to medical, clinical development or commercial strategies related to Oncology

Strategic thinking, specifically related to the development of Oncology Global Medical Affairs Goals and Strategies that address asset value proposition, insights from affiliates and regions, and clinical and value evidence.

Customer expertise especially scientific leadership and other key stakeholders (public groups, government officials, medical professional organizations) in the oncology therapeutic area

Proven ability to effectively influence company life cycle management, and data generation

- In a matrix environment, able to effectively collaborate with and influence partners across divisions; can collaborate with others to resolve conflicts across organizations.
