Reporting directly to the Director, Integrated Finance Services, the Finance Partner will be responsible for providing high quality strategic budget, forecasting, planning and advisory support to a portfolio of clients. These services are expected to be delivered with consideration of clients' long term objectives in relation to teaching, learning, research and service. The services are to be delivered in close consultation with supervisors, managers, senior leaders and staff while using a comprehensive finance, accounting and budgeting knowledge. The incumbent is expected to develop strong relationships with client staff by providing a consistent quality of service that aligns with all necessary policy and legislation and aligns with the client's strategic objectives.

Specific responsibilities include:

Faculty/Unit Budget Planning and Forecasting

  • Coordinates and manages the annual budget planning and allocation process on behalf of the senior management team; annual budget planning process requires the development of strategies and processes for the allocation of both permanent and one -time resource allocations
  • Manages budget/financial change initiatives including the identification of required changes and recommended course of action

Management of Faculty/Unit Resources

  • Ensures that faculty/unit financial processes and procedures are in accordance with all necessary regulations and university policies/procedures
  • Overseas expenditures and revenues across all funds ensuring compliance with regulatory, granting agency and donor stewardship requirements
  • Implements, reviews and improves internal control structure while considering risk and resource implications; process involves working in conjunction with and consultation of all necessary stakeholders
  • Leads and manages the faculty/unit year end processes including accurate accruals, performance of variance analysis and maintenance of appropriate documentation/audit trail

Finance Unit Management

  • Mentors and trains new administrative professional and support staff in relation to financial and budgetary practices
  • Manages and leads year-end financial process to ensure adherence with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Plays key role in recruitment and hiring of faculty/unit finance and accounting positions
  • Performs performance appraisal process for finance unit staff
  • Develops goals and objectives for the finance unit and ensures that these goals are considered in relation to all performance appraisal processes (re: finance unit staff)

Strategic Analysis and Advisory Services

  • Develops regular financial reporting and ad hoc reporting to assist senior management in the strategic decision making process; financial reporting to include high level variance analysis and forecasting to highlight issues

Representation of Faculty on Financial Matters within the Institution and with External Parties

  • Acts as the financial representative when working with external parties (granting agencies, auditors, regulatory authorities) and central service units (Financial Services, Supply Management Services, Risk Management Services)
  • Provides financial reporting/analysis as required while working with external parties
  • Reviews third party agreements to assess financial and budgetary impacts

Qualifications:

  • Degree in business or related field with a professional accounting designation (CA, CMA, CGA, CPA)
  • 3-5 years of related experience
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work both independently as well as play a role within a cohesive team of professionals
  • Extensive knowledge of financial reporting and budgeting especially as it pertains to financial performance measurement
  • Ability to perform financial functions within an industry subjeCt to various internal and external policies, procedures and regulations

In accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer Agreement, this full-time continuing position offers a comprehensive benefits package found at: www.hrs.ualberta.ca and annual salary range of $64,382 - $107,310.
