School of Social Science

The School is one of the most prestigious of its type in Australia, with over 900 equivalent full-time students, including 100 research higher degree students, and over 45 academic staff. It is a research-intensive School comprising the disciplines of anthropology, archaeology, criminology and sociology. At the undergraduate level, the School manages the Bachelor of Social Science and also offers majors in each discipline within the Bachelor of Arts, along with an archaeological science major in the Bachelor of Science. From 2017 the School will offer a Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice (Honours) program. The School also manages postgraduate coursework programs in Development Practice, Community Development, Museum Studies, and Heritage Management.

The role

The School of Social Science is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Anthropology, commencing in January 2017. The role involves teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Medical Anthropology as well as other areas of expertise. The successful applicant will undertake postgraduate thesis research supervision, perform service and engagement activities in the School, and conduct research, including bringing in external grant funding and publishing scholarly papers.

The person

Applicants must have a PhD in anthropology, strong research skills, and an ability to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in medical anthropology and/or cross-cultural studies of health and illness. Expertise and teaching experience in gender and development; religion; or migration studies is also desirable.  High level interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to establish effective relationships within the University and with external agencies is essential, as is experience in applying for research grants.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, continuing appointment (commencing January 2017) at Academic Level B (Teaching & Research). The base salary is: $89,458 to $106,232, plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17%.
