Road transportation is about to experience a paradigm shift towards semi- and fully- autonomous vehicles in which new systems for traffic detection, communications and advanced control will be of paramount importance to insure traffic safety and efficiency. The successful candidate for this post will investigate and develop a simulation platform for studying the impacts of introducing autonomous vehicles in to existing traffic streams and demonstrating where further efficiencies might be achieved, particularly in traffic control strategies.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Transportation Research Group (TRG) in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment at its new Boldrewood Innovation Campus in Southampton. The TRG is a multi-disciplinary group founded in 1967 and recognised worldwide as a leading University centre for engineering-related transportation research. The project will be jointly funded between the University of Southampton and theTransport Systems Catapult, TSC (https://ts.catapult.org.uk), one of seven elite technology and innovation centres established by the UK government to accelerate new technologies from academic research to industrial production. You will be based at the University but with secondments to the TSC in Milton Keynes.
Applicants will be expected to have, or be nearing completion of, a PhD in Engineering, Science or Computer Science and experience in computer modelling/simulation and software development are essential. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD (prior to this, the title of Senior Research Assistant would be given).
The successful candidate will have access to world-class experimental facilities and data-sets provided by the project partners and work with a team of engineers with diverse expertise and skills. The Transportation Research Group provides a strong environment for personal and career development.
