Description:
Merck Research Laboratories, a leader within
the pharmaceutical industry in discovering and developing new drugs, is seeking
a DVM and/or PhD with experience in
preclinical ophthalmic examinations. The successful candidate will play
an important role in a multidisciplinary department whose objective is to fully
characterize the toxicity of drug candidates and to determine the relevance of
these findings for human clinical studies. The responsibilities of the
position include performing clinical ophthalmic examinations, interpreting
data, preparing study reports, and serving as a resource within the company for
ophthalmic issues. In addition, research opportunities include
collaborative participation in the drug discovery/development process in
various therapeutic areas and serving as a study director. Outstanding
written and verbal communication skills are essential.
The position is located at Merck
Research Laboratories, Department of Safety Assessment, West Point, PA.
Qualifications
Education Requirements:
- DVM and/or PhD or equivalent, with experience in
toxicology, pathology, laboratory animal medicine or in a related
scientific discipline (e.g., pharmacology, physiology).
Required:
- Preclinical ophthalmic examination experience
Preferred:
- Preclinical ophthalmic examination experience in mice,
rats, dogs, rabbits, and monkeys
- Experience with indirect ophthalmoscopy, slit lamp
biomicroscopy, and direct ophthalmoscopy
- Interpretation of preclinical ophthalmic examination
data; and scientific report writing skills
- Ophthalmic photography experience (slit lamp and fundus
camera in a variety of species)
- Experience with other ophthalmic examination
procedures/modalities, such as intra-ocular pressure measurements,
fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography
- Experience in general pharmaceutical drug development
- Ophthalmic drug development experience
