Job Details

The Biozentrum of the University of Basel is one of the leading institutes worldwide for molecular and biomedical basic research and teaching. It is home to more than 30 research groups with scientists from over 40 countries. Research at the Biozentrum focuses on the areas of Cell Growth & Development, Infection Biology, Neurobiology, Structural Biology & Biophysics and Computational & Systems Biology. With its more than 500 employees, the Biozentrum is the largest department at the University of Basel's Faculty of Science.

A Phd student position is available in the group of Stephan Grzesiek. Our aim is to apply and develop modern NMR methods for obtaining structure, dynamics, and function information on biomacromolecules and their complexes. Current research focuses on developments for the study of G protein coupled receptors, methods for effective isotope labeling in higher eukaryotic cells, cancer, and protein folding.

The technical equipment includes state-of-the art 900 MHz and 600 MHz high-resolution spectrometers with cryo and magic angle spinning probes, many other biophysical technologies and a protein expression lab. The group is embedded in the Focal Area "Structural Biology and Biophysics" of the Biozentrum, which offers a stimulating interdisciplinary environment and in-house availability of all methods of modern structural biology. The PhD training will include modern NMR and structural biology as well as formal education within the Biozentrum's graduate teaching program.

Candidates need a master degree in biochemistry, physical chemistry, physics or a related scientific discipline at the time of the PhD start. They should have experience in one or several of the following areas: membrane biophysics, molecular biology or protein production with a background in structure, macromolecular NMR, or method development for solution or solid state NMR.

Applications should include cover letter, CV, and contact information of two reference persons. Applications and informal queries about the lab and research projects should be directed by email to stephan.grzesiek@unibas.ch
