The Director, Enabling Technology - Chemistry is responsible for managing the deployment of novel chemistry and processing technologies to ensure the design and development of robust, sustainable and efficient API manufacturing processes.

The Director reports to the Executive Director, Process Research & Development in the Merck Research Laboratories organization. This role has direct supervisory responsibility for up to 15 scientists who work closely within multidisciplinary teams comprised of analytical chemists, synthetic organic chemists and engineers. There is an established team of flow chemists in the department and the ability to set strategy and enhance the adoption of flow and continuous processing across Merck is critical. The incumbent will be responsible for the recruiting, appraisal and development of personnel under his/her supervision. The Director selects, trains, and effectively recommends transfers, merit increases, promotions, and closures of personnel under his/her direction within the framework of Company policy.

Critical tasks involve oversight of laboratory equipment design and procurement, enabling new chemical transformations and influencing route design. The team managed by the role also supports API campaigns at lab, pilot and manufacturing scale. Proactive resourcing planning, risk assessment strategies and budget management will be necessary.

The Director establishes, recommends, and maintains external contracts for Process Research & Development, including collaborations, grants, fellowships, and consultants in expressed fields of activity. Maintaining a strong external network across the academic community is expected, as well as advancing an internal culture of scientific excellence and collaboration.

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:

- Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering or related field is required

Required Experience and Skills:

- A minimum of 5 years experience and demonstrated ability in leading cross-functional groups.

- Track record and commitment to employee development/retention

- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.

- A track record of delivering results.

- Demonstrated ability in selection and prioritization of a portfolio of projects.

- Internationally recognized in academia and industry with a demonstrated history of publications/presentations with high impact factor
