QBI PhD Positions

Established in 2003, QBI (http://www.qbi.uq.edu.au) is situated on the St Lucia campus of UQ. It is home to more than 450 staff and students, including 41 group leaders, working across a range of disciplines, who are focused on discovering the fundamental mechanisms that regulate brain development and function in health and disease.

Over the past decade QBI has become known as one of the world's leading neuroscience research institutes. It played a key role in contributing to UQ attaining the highest possible score of 5 for neuroscience, in the 2010, 2012 and 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) reviews, one of only two universities in Australia to achieve this.

The role

Successful applicants will enrol in UQ's PhD program and will become part of a growing team of researchers and students studying neuroscience at QBI. With access to world class research facilities, candidates will have the opportunity to develop their career in a multidisciplinary collaborative research environment. Key areas of interest and research include:

  • Cognition and behaviour

  • Computation and neuronal circuits

  • Neurogenesis and neuronal survival

  • Neuroimaging

  • Neuronal trafficking

  • Genetics and epigenetics

  • Neuronal development and connectivity

  • Sensory systems

  • Synaptic function

A 3-4 year program, a PhD is an advanced academic qualification that is a requirement for the majority of academic and research positions in a wide range of fields and industries. The aim of the PhD is to foster the development of independent research skills. These skills include the capacity to formulate a specific problem, to develop mastery of appropriate conceptual and methodological skills, and to relate the research topic to a broader framework of knowledge in a relevant disciplinary area.

The person

Both Australian and International applicants are welcome to apply. Candidates should have a First Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in neuroscience, molecular biology, bioscience, psychology, genetics, physical sciences, engineering, mathematics or a related discipline. Strong academic performance, the commitment to conduct high quality neuroscience research, and published output are highly desirable.
