Senior Technician

All staff members in the Department of Biotechnology and Food Technology are actively involved in externally funded research. There are four research areas in the Department, comprising principal investigators, postdoctoral fellows, research associates and post graduate students. This large number of researchers necessitates proper co-ordination and management of laboratories and provision of technical assistance to students in the use of specialized equipment.

Minimum requirements

  • B Tech/Hons degree in biotechnology, Biochemistry or Microbiology
  • Experience and competence in general microbiology and biochemistry techniques and/or molecular biotechnology and/or analytical instrumentation
  • Experience in management of research laboratories

 

Additional requirements

  • Evidence of research outputs
  • Track record of technical assistance provided to research laboratories

 

Summary of duties

  • Ordering and inventory control of equipment, chemicals and consumables
  • Instituting and maintaining good laboratory practices
  • Assist postgraduate students in their research projects
  • Perform other duties as determined by the Head of Department

 

Salary: R200100 to R334980 p.a, plus benefits
