The Opportunity

To join a creative, innovative and friendly team at the IT Innovation Centre, part of the Department of Electronics and Computer Science. Based on the Southampton Science Park, we have an international reputation for advancing a wide range of information technologies and pursuing their deployment in industry and commerce. Current work includes big data, information security, human-centric computing and information systems, applied in sectors including, cultural heritage, e-democracy, environment, healthcare and transport.

Focused on a professional approach to software development in an agile team environment, our Research Engineers can become involved in all aspects of the project lifecycle, including requirements analysis, architecture, documentation, and demonstrating proofs of concept.

You

A creative, innovative thinker with outstanding problem-solving skills, and the ability to learn quickly and adapt to new challenges. With a keen interest in new and emerging technologies, you are passionate about innovation and excited by the idea of bringing research closer to market. Your excellent written and oral communication enables you to present ideas clearly and effectively to colleagues, project partners and clients.

With a degree and possibly a post-graduate qualification in computer science or a related discipline, you have excellent software development skills, and you recognise the importance of good software engineering to create robust and usable software. Through employment or internship, you have commercial and/or academic experience of applying IT-based research to real-world problems.

You have expertise in OO programming languages (some or all of Java, Python, C++) and experience of one or more of HTML/CSS, JavaScript/JQuery, and SQL/NoSQL databases. You are excited by the opportunity to use or develop your skills using frameworks such as Angular and React; RESTful service development; Java frameworks such as Spring, Hibernate; Storm and Spark; Hadoop, Hive and HBase; devops tools and methods such as CI, Docker, Vagrant and Ansible; semantic languages for knowledge representation and reasoning (e.g. OWL, SPARQL and RDF); and logical programming languages (e.g. Datalog).
