JOB PURPOSE:

To be an active member of the AHRC-funded research project ‘Performing Restoration Shakespeare’, assisting the Principal Investigator (Prof Richard Schoch, Queen’s University Belfast) and the International Co-Investigator (Prof Amanda Eubanks Winkler, Syracuse University, USA) in the planning, delivery and evaluation of research and impact activities.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Assist the project Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator in planning, delivering and evaluating the project's research and impact activities, ranging from archival study to scholar-artist workshops to production and curation of digital resources.
  • Liaise with project partners (Shakespeare's Globe [London], Folger Shakespeare Library [Washington, DC], and Shakespeare Birthplace Trust [Stratford-upon-Avon]) in delivering on-site research and impact events.
  • Serve on the Project Management Team, participating in regular meetings to advance project goals, including liaison with project partners and External Advisory Board.
  • Carry out analysis and critical evaluation of continuing project activities with both researchers and research users in London,
  • Stratford-upon-Avon and Washington, DC. (Research users include arts administrators, performing artists, and audiences for theatre and music).
  • Promote and publicize project events through social media, print, and other channels as appropriate, and in conjunction with project partners.
  • Oversee development of project website, including selection and editing of content (eg, rehearsal videos, audience interviews).
  • Curate the project's video and digital components, in conjunction with the technical partner Blue Land Media in Washington, DC.
  • Assist PI and Co-I in the preparation of published research (e.g., co-editing a collection of essays).
  • Prepare her/his own material for publication in national and international journals and presentations at national and international conferences, including practice-based research as appropriate. Present regular progress reports on research to members of the research group and to external audiences in order to disseminate and publicise research findings. Carry out administrative tasks associated with the research project to ensure that the project is completed on time and within budget. These might include organisation of project meetings, workshops and summer school events; preparation of project documents (eg, audience enrichment resources); logistical coordination for workshop participants, project evaluation; financial control; risk assessment of research activities; and liaison with collaborating non-academic institutions. Keep abreast of developments in the post holder's own specialism and related disciplines.


Planning and Organising:

  • Plan for specific aspects of the research programme (timescales range from 1-30 months in advance) and contribute to research group planning.
  • Plan for the use of research resources, including IT and workshop events as appropriate.
  • Plan own day-to day activity within framework of the agreed research programme.
  • Plan up to a year in advance to meet deadlines for journal publications and to prepare presentations and papers for conferences.
  • Coordinate and liaise with other members of the research group over work progress.


Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Ensure research resources are used in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Provide guidance as required to support staff (including from partner institutions) who may be assisting with the research.

 

 


Internal and External Relationships:

  • Liaise on a regular basis with colleagues and project partner staff.
  • Build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of information.
  • Join external networks to share information and ideas and to enhance career development.

 


ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Earned PhD in theatre history, musicology, early modern drama or Shakespeare studies.
  • Relevant research experience theatre history, musicology, early modern drama or Shakespeare studies.
  • Publications or work in press appropriate to stage of career.
  • Sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the candidate's own discipline(s) and of research methods and techniques to work within the established research programme.
  • Interest in public engagement and research impact.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
  • Ability to build contacts and participate in internal and external networks.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and across disciplines.
  • Available to start employment no later than April 1st 201
  • Available for a 12-week residency at the Folger Shakespeare Library (Washington, DC), August-October 2018 and for occasional travel to London and Stratford-upon-Avon throughout the project life cycle.

 

 


DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Website development. Use of practice-based research methods.
  • Evidence of interdisciplinary research.
  • Background in theatre or music practice and/or production.
  • Presentation of research material to non-academic audiences, orally or in writing.
  • Previous collaboration with non-academic partners.
  • Author or co-author of peer-reviewed research outputs, including practice-based outputs.
