Job Details

JOB PURPOSE:

To undertake research in line with the School’s research strategy, to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and to contribute to School administration/outreach activity.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Teaching:

  • Deliver teaching and assessment activities including lectures, seminar, tutorials, setting/marking coursework, to undergraduates and postgraduates.
  • Select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and progress of students by reference to the criteria and provide constructive feedback to students.
  • Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback.
  • Plan and develop independent teaching contributions and contribute to the revision of course units.
  • Help to develop appropriate teaching approaches and contribute to curriculum development.
  • Contribute to survey modules on the history of the American South; develop and teach other modules related to lecturer’s research specialisms; contribute to teaching of MA History.


Research:

  • Develop and plan an area of personal research and expertise in American history in association with Director of Research/mentor.
  • Publish research in appropriate journals etc. and present work at conferences.
  • Provide guidance to other staff and students on own specialist area.
  • Develop research collaborations with colleagues in other institutions.
  • Raise external research income as appropriate.


Administration/Contribution to the Community:

  • Contribute to the School’s outreach strategy by developing external links.
  • Provide pastoral care for students within own area to ensure that all issues are dealt with in a timely, sympathetic and effective manner.
  • Carry out designated routine School administrative duties, including, for example, committee work, course administration etc.
  • Be responsible for the record–keeping associated with teaching and the preparation of teaching materials.


Planning and Organising:

  • Plan and manage own teaching and tutorials as agreed with Head of School/mentor.
  • Update modules in line with School’s teaching strategy. Plan and prepare research papers to meet publication deadlines.


Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Use teaching and research resources as required.
  • Act as mentor for students.


Internal and External Relationships:

  • Member of the School Board and Examination Board and such other committees as are relevant to administrative duties.
  • Collaborate with other staff within School.
  • Become involved in developing links or joining external networks to share information and ideas.
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach programme.

 

 


ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Primary degree or higher degree involving History.
  • Completed Ph.D. in History or a cognate subject.
  • High quality research (as recognised by the standards of REF2014) published or submitted for publication, demonstrating, to a degree appropriate to stage in career, the potential to enhance the research culture of the School.
  • Research specialism in the History of the American South.
  • A clear agenda for future research.
  • Ability to generate external research income, as appropriate to stage of career.
  • Relevant teaching experience at University level appropriate to stage of career.
  • Experience in lecturing and examining.
  • Demonstrable ability to contribute to L1 Exploring History and to teach survey courses on the history of the American south and upper level courses in an area of candidate’s research specialism.
  • Demonstrable ability to undertake administrative duties appropriate to the post.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
  • Effective interpersonal skills. High level of analytical capability.
  • Able to work outside normal office hours if necessary.

 


DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Research specialism in EITHER the history of the Colonial/Revolutionary period OR the post-1945 period of American history.
  • Demonstrable ability to contribute to the MA strand in US History.
