JOB PURPOSE:

To generate income for Queen’s University Belfast by securing major gifts from alumni and others.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • To devise and implement a fundraising plan to grow income from individuals for institutional priorities. To achieve annual income targets for major gift fundraising.
  • To cultivate and solicit individual major gift prospects to financially support priority projects.
  • To work collaboratively with academic champions, senior officers of the University, volunteers and colleagues in the
  • Development and Alumni Relations team with a view to personally soliciting major gifts.
  • To undertake and manage all correspondence with individuals including drafting tailored case for support documents and providing written confirmation of gifts and pledges.
  • To foster and proactively promote a positive understanding of the benefits and importance of philanthropy amongst the
  • University’s alumni and networks.
  • To maintain complete and accurate records of all fundraising activity on Raiser’s Edge in accordance with the Development Office’s procedures.
  • To plan, organise and deliver cultivation and stewardship activities for prospects and donors in own portfolio.
  • To provide full briefings for senior staff and/or volunteers for meetings with prospects and donors.
  • To serve as a liaison between staff of other University departments and Development Office colleagues as required.
  • To provide support to the Head of Major Gifts as required.


Planning and Organising:

  • Contribute to departmental planning to meet fundraising objectives.
  • Oversee all cultivation events for key prospects in own portfolio.
  • Plan own work over short to medium term to ensure agreed financial and non-financial targets are achieved.


Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Finance: Stewardship of major gift monies to ensure they are used for intended purposes.
  • Responsible for organising own specialist/professional work to meet Directorate and own objectives.

 

 

Internal and External Relationships:

  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Development and Alumni Relations Office team to ensure that prospects are cultivated with a view to developing long-term relationships.
  • Interact with staff in Faculties and Directorates across the University, in particular academic project leaders to understand corporate priorities and prepare funding proposals. Network with peers in the sector to ensure best practice is followed.


ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • A degree or equivalent. A minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in a major gift fundraising environment in the Higher Education or charity sectors or a proven track record of income generation in a Marketing or Sales environment.
  • Experience of good stewardship/ key account management practices.
  • Proven track record of meeting financial targets.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to prioritise and make decisions and to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to work with independence within the context of a team environment and a network of relationships.
  • Ability to interpret reports and understand budgets.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills; superior interpersonal skills; confident and courteous.
  • Creative thinker.
  • Ability to plan strategically and display intuitive.
  • Good negotiating skills.
  • Ability to build effective relationships and to influence at senior level; tactful.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Able to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to travel and to work irregular hours.


DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Experience of working on fundraising campaigns.
  • Experience of working with or securing funding from high net worth individuals.
  • Experience of successfully conducting negotiations. Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge or other contact management database.
  • Exposure to a moves management fundraising culture.
  • Interested in academic life; an understanding of and strong commitment to education.
