Faculty of Engineering and the Environment

Energy and Climate Change Division / Sustainable Energy Research Group

You will work in the Sustainable Energy Research Group on an interdisciplinary domestic energy consumption analysis project until June 2019.  The project will implement a series of tests of energy reduction interventions in a representative sample of households across the Solent region. The project is funded through OFGEM's Low Carbon Network Fund programme and is a collaboration between the University of Southampton, SSE plc, DNV GL, Navetas and Neighbourhood Economics. This role will involve

  • Leading the University’s contributions management of a large scale longitudinal household panel survey (sub-contracted via SSE to a specialist agency) which will form the basis for three trial intervention groups and a control;
  • Leading the University’s analysis of survey and temporal energy consumption monitoring (smart meter) data to establish baseline patterns and to assess the impact of the energy reduction interventions;
  • Substantial contributions to the design of a participant ‘portal’ providing energy consumption feedback as part of the interventions;
  • Contributing to the development of a ‘customer behaviour’ microsimulation model and to trial data documentation and management;
  • Substantial contributions to internal and external dissemination of results through papers, presentations, journal articles and media activities

The work will be performed at the University of Southampton but regular project-related travel in the South East and London will be expected together with attendance at national and international conferences and events as appropriate. The project will be interdisciplinary and will involve close collaboration with non-academic project partners and substantial exposure to energy sector policy. The role may also involve additional fieldwork with the recruited trial participants.

It is essential that you have a PhD/equivalent or equivalent research experience in a demonstrably relevant subject area e.g. energy modelling, engineering, physical sciences, etc.  And will also need to demonstrate competence in the management and analysis of large scale survey datasets. You should be well organised, resourceful, have good people skills, a good command of English both written and spoken, and must be able to work well in a team environment.

Please note that irrespective of the closing date for applications we are keen for an early start date. Should a suitable applicant be identified before this date we reserve the right to close the post earlier.
