Position:

The Wits Evolutionary Studies Institute (ESI) invites suitably qualified and experienced applicants to apply for the position of Operations Manager (AD 07).

Key responsibilities:

The Operations Manager will play a critical role in the development and coordination of ESI programmes including research, dissemination of information, human resources and networking, as well as interaction with the national, regional and international partners and collaborators.

Requirements:

PhD or MSc in Palaeoscience or Business Science, or MBA with 5 years management experience and extensive knowledge of university financial systems. 

Duties:

  • Manage the financial requirements of the Institute, including reconciliations, forecasting budgets, and audits.
  • Write up, with input from the Director, important Institute documents e.g.  Annual Reports, fundraising documents, and reports to donors.
  • Manage the day-to-day functioning of the ESI, including establishing and maintaining information systems, high-level budgeting and financial reporting.
  • Preparing Board and Scientific Advisory Committee meetings.
  • Manage and promote interactions with research partners, the DST and NRF, Advisory Board and Scientific Advisory Committee members, and research collaborators locally and abroad.
  • Develop and manage information systems for reporting and disseminating research information, including through media and other public platforms.
  • Manage and coordinate the ESI's Research Programmes in collaboration with university and partner institutions.
  • Interpret and apply university and departmental policy into requirements for actions and compliance by the ESI.
  • Supervision and quality control of support staff.
  • Familiarity understanding and experience of South African Palaeosciences.
  • The Manager will report directly to the ESI Director.

 

Competencies:

  • Advanced strategic and technical skills in of all aspects of office management, including planning, arranging, recording and reporting.
  • Familiarity with South African university or research environment and experience in interacting with researchers and senior university management.
  • Highly skilled in communications and communication technology as the performance of the ESI is dependent on effective interaction with its partners and the dissemination of information.
 

Remuneration and conditions of service: A competitive university package with excellent benefits offered, commensurate with the level of appointment. The offer will be full-time appointment lasting for a period of five years, but renewable for another period of five years depending on performance and achievement.
