The DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Human Development (CoE-HUMAN), a research entity operating under the office of the DVC Research, University of the Witwatersrand, invites applicants for the position of Centre Manager. The CoE-HUMAN is one of 14 Centres of Excellence funded by the Department of Science and Technology through the National Research Foundation, and the only CoE in the human and social sciences.

Managers play a critical role in CoEs, including maintaining and developing collaborations with universities and science councils, administering a large bursary and grant portfolio, convening meetings, interacting with researchers, ensuring that research and scholarship in the CoE-HUMAN is widely disseminated, and guaranteeing that the CoE fulfils its Key Performance Areas and follows the NRF guidelines for CoEs and the procedures stipulated at the University.

Requirements:

Advanced degree in Social or Business Science or Humanities and experience in management in a university and/or research environment.

Duties:

  • Manage the day-to-day functioning of the Centre, including administration, oversight of finances, filing and documentation, travel arrangements, arranging and reporting on meetings, and communication and website updates.
  • Prepare for and report on Management and Steering Committee meetings.
  • Manage the Centre’s bursary and grant programme, including advertising, contracting and reporting.
  • Manage the reporting and dissemination of research in the Centre’s network, including through the media and other public platforms.
  • Supervise support staff, including the Financial Administrator and research assistants.
  • Oversee the Director’s programme, meetings and travel.


The Centre Manager reports directly to the Director, Professor Linda Richter.

Competencies:

  • Advanced administrative and managerial skills.
  • High level of computer literacy, including spreadsheets and graphics.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Familiarity with the South African university and/or research environment and experience in interacting with researchers and university administration and management.
  • Basic understanding of issues in the social sciences, humanities and/or public health.
