Researcher in Wine Sciences  (Ref. AW12/374/1016)

The Institute for Wine Biotechnology (IWBT) is an established postgraduate training and research institute within the Department of Viticulture and Oenology that focuses on using visionary training and innovative research to provide the South African wine and grapevine industries with well-qualified human resources, cutting-edge technology, the latest scientific knowledge and environmentally friendly products and processes. The research programme of the Institute is team-orientated and includes the in-depth biological study of all wine-related organisms. The following vacancy in the Grapevine Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Research Group of the IWBT is available to a suitable candidate to become part of a dynamic postgraduate training and research team.

Duties

  • Postgraduate teaching and supervision;
  • The development/extension of an active and dynamic research programme in grape biology, biotechnology and integrative viticulture/wine sciences, with a particular focus on terpenoid metabolism in plants;
  • Continuous publication of research results by means of articles and conference papers;
  • The development of national and international research partnerships;
  • Service to the scientific and wine industry, as required.


Job Requirements

  • A PhD in Molecular Biology, preferably with plant molecular biology as focus;
  • Subject knowledge in chemical analytical methods;
  • Subject knowledge of statistical analyses of complex datasets;
  • A record of published research in peer-reviewed journals and/or other innovation-driven outputs;
  • Capability to conduct research as part of a team and independently;
  • A willingness to obtain research funds;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • The ability to work within a team.


Additional information that must be included:

Recommendation

  • Experience in the use of basic -omics applications (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics or metabolomics);
  • Experience with integrative research in Wine Sciences;
  • Knowledge of and experience in terpenoid metabolism of plants;
  • Experience in the use of heterologous model systems such as bacteria, yeast and plant models in research;
  • Experience in multivariate chemometrics and basic bioinformatics;
  • Previous exposure to postgraduate student supervision.
