The School of Chemical Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology is a national leader in the field and has an excellent international reputation. With 28 teaching and research staff, including 14 professors, the School provides quality programs and leadership in chemical engineering education, research and development, and expert consulting to support the process industries. The School conducts undergraduate teaching in the disciplines of chemical, biological, environmental and metallurgical engineering and teaches into postgraduate and continuing education programs.  The School offers a Masters degree in Petroleum Engineering as well as 4th year undergraduate courses in this field.

In conjunction with key players in the Queensland coal seam gas (CSG) industry, UQ is has established a world class centre of excellence for CSG (The Centre) to strengthen research and education in disciplines of importance for the developing CSG/LNG industry. The Centre provides a single coordinated access point for industry and government to the science and engineering behind onshore, unconventional gas. The Centre currently has 5 professors, a Centre Director and CSG Industry Chairs in Petroleum Engineering, Geoscience, Water and Social Performance.

The role

The position will lead education of international standard and provide leadership for research staff and postgraduate students with UQ's onshore gas research chiefly via the Centre for Coal Seam Gas (the Centre).

The successful candidate will work with senior staff in the Centre, the School of Chemical Engineering, School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering and the School of Earth Sciences, to develop a world class research program on well engineering and production technology as it relates to CSG and other unconventional gas. You will be expected to develop and keep current leading education material related to unconventional gas as well as to conceive and implement research, taking into account the needs of a rapidly expanding CSG/LNG industry and the requirements of communities and governments.

A key aspect of the research will be integration with other scientists and engineers within UQ's the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology to develop assist the Centre Director in developing interdisciplinary research programs leading to improved well and production technologies.

The position will include Masters course development and coordination for Drilling Engineering, Production Technology, and Geomechanics and Stimulation as well as delivering 'conversion' courses to prepare and mentor students for the UQ, unconventional gas Field Development Planning exercise.

The person

Applicant should possess a PhD qualification in an appropriate aspect of petroleum engineering with application in the unconventional petroleum industry. Over 15 years' experience in unconventional gas exploration, appraisal and development and/or a related research organisation. It is expected that the candidate will have expert knowledge in aspects of well engineering, completion design and stimulation, artificial lift and production technology as evidenced by work experience, publications, citations, participation in industry technical conferences and/or invited presentations.  In addition, applicants will have excellent research management skills and an ability to conceptualise and develop new research initiatives as well as significant experience with the oil and gas industry in unconventional resources or a significant track record of close collaboration with that industry.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for four years at Academic level D or E. Level of appointment will be dependent upon qualifications, experience and academic achievements.

The remuneration package will be in the range $131,951 - $169,971 p.a. (Level D to E), plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $154,382 - $198,866 p.a.).
