Project Manager - Transcription Acceleration

Job Details

School of Information Technology & Electrical Engineering

It is an exciting time to get involved with the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, located on UQ's St. Lucia campus.  The School is ramping up its investment in teaching, research and engagement in line with a bold, new strategic vision to ensure the School is at the forefront of meaningful research outcomes and pedagogy across its core impact areas of health, data, automation and energy.  Boasting strong student enrolments in professionally accredited programs, combined with world-class researchers and facilities, the School is focused on strengthening its position in the global ICT and engineering communities.  By attracting the brightest minds and fostering a truly innovative and collaborative work environment, the School will develop global solutions to contemporary issues and mentor the leaders of tomorrow.

The transcription Acceleration Project

The ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language (CoEDL) works to document and preserve endangered languages, with a strong focus on the indigenous languages of Australia and the Asia Pacific region.

Despite vast efforts to document the world's dwindling linguistic diversity in the last two decades, we are losing the race to document the 3-4,000 languages that are likely to disappear this century without being recorded. To give an idea of the scale of the problem, current methods of documentation produce, in the best-case scenario, a grammar and short dictionary after four to five person years of full-time research on an undescribed language.

A key bottleneck is this work is the transcription from spoken language to written forms for previously undocumented languages. We are working to develop an interactive pipeline to augment linguists' productivity, through user-friendly interfaces and data management tools and procedures. A skilled project manager is needed to lead the design and development of the user interface components and to coordinate the interdisciplinary team of researchers with linguistic and engineering skills.

The role

The successful appointee will contribute to the Transcription Acceleration Project (TAP) through management of the interdisciplinary team, coordinating the technology development with the linguistic community. You will be responsible for bridging the gap between the needs of the users and the technology development, and for identifying the requirements of the project development.

The person

Applicants should possess at least an undergraduate degree in interaction design or related discipline and for appointment to HEW Level 7 must have a minimum of 5 years of project management or interaction design experience related to technology development.  Experience in the evaluation and design of user interfaces is essential as is the ability to think computationally.

The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion.

Applications are particularly encouraged from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This role is a full-time position; however part-time working arrangements may be negotiated.

Remuneration

This is a full-time fixed term appointment at HEW Level 6 or HEW Level 7 depending on the qualifications and experience of the applicant. The remuneration package will be in the range of:

HEW 6 - $72,046 - $77,635 per annum plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 9.5% (total package will be in the range of $78,890 - $85,010 per annum).

HEW 7 - $79,499 - $86,957 per annum plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 9.5% (total package will be in the range of $87,051 - $95,211 per annum).
