Description:

  • Radiation sciences discipline seeks to attract an enthusiastic Technician to contribute to the laboratory activities of the department. The successful candidate will need the ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • Performing laboratory experiments using radioactive materials, for state hospitals and for private hospitals and institutions
  • Performing radioactive counting for other departments within the university.
  • Assisting staff from other departments with radioactive experimental work.
  • Performing regular stock-taking and ordering supplies and consumables – sourcing necessary consumables, getting quotes, getting PRV’s signed by the directors of the laboratory, delivering PRV’s to Wits Health Consortium for ordering of consumables.
  • Ensuring that all equipment, eg the scintillation counters are in good working order, by arranging for services for them and for repairs to be carried out on them.
  • Analysing data of the laboratory experiments and ensuring that referring physicians receive results of tests carried out in the laboratory.
  • Being responsible for the accounts of the laboratory – submitting accounts to Wits Health Consortium for invoices to be raised and sent to the private institutions for payment.
  • Following up with payments made by phoning the relevant private institutions.
  • Liaising with Wits Health Consortium regarding account payments.
  • Balancing the bank account of the laboratory, to ensure that once debtors’ payments are made, they are transferred to the bank account of the laboratory.
  • Ensuring that the license for the laboratory from the Department of Health is up to date and not expired, and when nearing expiration, applying for renewal of the license.
  • Ensuring that the radioactive waste is stored in a safe place until it has decayed, and then arranging for it’s appropriate disposal, according to the rules and regulations of the Department of Health, Radiation Department.
  • Assisting and carrying out any research studies undertaken by the laboratory.
  • Assisting supervisor with tasks that he needs help with – for eg, administrative work, helping collate data for research studies.
  • Administrative duties – doing reconciliation of work done at the laboratory, taking bookings of kits and private patients for tests, collecting payments from private patients and reconciling the petty cash box.


Requirements

  • National Diploma/B-Tech in Radiation, Master degree in the health sciences will be an advantage
  • 2-3 years of work experience
  • Computer knowledge – Word, Excel, PowerPoint &  email
  • Ability to respond after hours for important, timely or urgent matters
