The ARC Centre for Excellence for the Dynamics of Language (CoEDL) is launching an ambitious series of interlinked projects, focusing on language as a dynamic and variable system, and drawing on the full diversity of the world's languages, through four programs focusing on the design space of language (Shape), how it is learned (Learning) and processed (Processing), and how linguistic structures evolve at various timescales (Evolution).

CoEDL projects requiring speech science, signal processing and software engineering skills include:

  • the Transcription Acceleration Project (TAP), which aims to create an interactive pipeline to assist field linguists;

  • the Florence project, which aims to develop assistive technology for people with dementia and their carers;

  • the Discursis project which develops novel techniques for the automatic evaluation of communication dynamics;

  • the OPAL project, which is developing a child-friendly robot.


Software engineering is involved in all the above projects, including:

  • development of interactive interfaces for TAP and Florence;

  • extension of Discursis metrics from text to speech;

  • development of the cognitive architecture for OPAL based on Robot Operating System (ROS).


The role

The successful appointee/s will work within a multidisciplinary inter-school team, with a focus on the development of computational approaches that could include audio and speech processing; natural language processing; data fusion; machine learning; and information visualisation technologies, depending on your skills and interests.


The person

Applicants should possess a postgraduate qualification or equivalent industry experience in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or commensurate discipline with extensive experience in software/technology development.  In addition you will have expert knowledge in signal processing or software engineering.  Knowledge of key concepts which could include: natural language processing, artificial intelligence, information visualisation, computational linguistics, text analytics, signal processing is desirable.

Remuneration

There are up to four positions available on a full-time, fixed term (1 year) basis at Academic Research Level A.  The remuneration package will be in the range $62,654 - $84.986 per annum, plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $73,305 - $99,434 per annum).
