Job Details

Details

This PhD project represents an opportunity to join the Carceral Geography Lab at the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham, and to pursue a research project which draws together carceral geography, with architectural, historical and cultural geography, and with criminology. Candidates will study under the supervision of Dr Dominique Moran.
Within a broader context of geographies of incarceration, this project takes forward the idea of a carceral cultural landscape, and advances the notion of the ‘post-prison’, as a site no longer functioning as a space of incarceration, but nevertheless still saturated with, and arguably communicative of, messages about the purpose of imprisonment both in terms of the of the system during which it was constructed, and during which it is protected, conserved, demolished, or left to decay.

Candidates are invited to consult with the prospective supervisor to discuss their research proposal, within which there is broad scope to designate both case study sites, contexts and time periods (e.g. contemporary and topical prison closures in the UK, or former prison sites already converted for other uses) and methodologies (which could include archival research, qualitative/mobile methodologies, arts-based methods and so on).

Funding Notes

UK and EU applicants may enter the competition for ESRC and / or AHRC scholarships at the University of Birmingham, depending on the specific research topic. A separate application is required for the funding competitions. Deadlines for these are available on the Midlands3Cities site (http://www.midlands3cities.ac.uk/midlands-3-cities/funding/funding.asp) and from the University of Birmingham ESRC DTC (http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/postgraduate/dr-fees/esrc/about.aspx). Note that applicants interested in applying for such funding must contact the named supervisor and apply for PhD study at Birmingham well ahead of these deadlines.
