We are seeking a highly motivated associate principal scientist to join our Oncology Discovery team at Merck, Boston. The successful candidate will be responsible for validating novel immunotherapy targets and contributing to both biologics and small molecule drug discovery programs. Responsibilities include the development and execution of experimental strategies to define the mechanism of action of, and mechanism of resistance to, immune-therapeutic agents. S/he will perform in vitro and ex-vivo experiments to determine the functional effect(s) of candidate target activation/inhibition by using a variety of assays to interrogate immune end-points. Candidate is expected to be up to date on advanced technologies for immunotherapy, actively apply new concepts as appropriate to continuously improve functional area capabilities as well as to keep abreast of published scientific literature.

Qualifications

Education:

- BS/BA degree in biological sciences with a minimum 10 years of industry or academia experience; or a MS degree in biological sciences with 7 years industry or academia experience; or PhD in Immunology or Cancer Biology with relevant postdoctoral experience and/or a minimum of 3 years of industry experience.

Required:

- Candidate is required to have excellent oral and written communication skills and with demonstrated ability to work independently to design and execute experiments, interpret data, troubleshoot and resolve technical challenges.
- Candidate is expected to have solid understanding of current Immuno-Oncology approaches and motivated to advance new therapeutic targets.
- Candidate must have expertise in developing in vitro and in vivo assays to investigate immune function and possess knowledge of technologies commonly used to assess immune endpoints.
- Candidate should have experience in the isolating, differentiating and manipulating primary human and mouse immune cells as well as experience in growth and maintenance of cell lines, proliferation and apoptosis assays, immunoassay techniques/platforms such as MLR, ELISA, Mesoscale.

Preferred:

- Demonstrated project leadership in industrial or academic setting
- Experience in bio/pharmaceutical drug discovery research and animal tumor modeling
- Experience with multi-parameter FACS and data processing
