JOB PURPOSE:

To undertake research in English Language and Linguistics in line with the School’s research strategy, to teach and examine at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and to contribute to School administration/outreach activity.

MAJOR DUTIES:
Teaching:
Research: Deliver teaching and assessment activities, normally within own area(s) of specialism, including lectures, setting/marking
coursework to undergraduates and postgraduates. Convene undergraduate modules and contribute to postgraduate
programmes in the School and, where relevant, the Faculty.
Select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and progress of students by reference to the criteria
and provide constructive feedback to students.
Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback.
Supervise practical work where it is part of the course, and advise students on methodological techniques.
Plan and develop independent teaching contributions and contribute to the design or revision of course units.
Help to develop appropriate teaching approaches and contribute to curriculum development.
Senior Lecturer:
Act as internal examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Develop and plan an area of personal research and expertise, and/or undertake research under supervision within a specific research project or as a member of a research team.
Publish research in appropriate journals etc. and present work at conferences.
Carry out analysis, critical evaluations and interpretations using methodologies and other techniques appropriate to area of research. Where appropriate, source and secure external funding in collaboration with others from the relevant funding bodies to ensure continued growth of the School’s research profile.
Provide guidance to other staff and students on own specialist area.
May work/collaborate on original research with colleagues in other institutions.
Supervise research students in area of interest.
Senior Lecturer:
Act as referee and contribute to peer assessment of research. Administration/Contribution to the Community:
Contribute to the School’s outreach strategy by developing external links.
Provide pastoral care for students within own area to ensure that all issues are dealt with in a timely, sympathetic and effective manner.
Carry out designated routine School administrative duties, including, for example, committee work, course administration etc.
Be responsible for the record–keeping associated with teaching and the preparation of teaching materials.
Senior Lecturer:
Act as mentor or appraiser to colleagues, including Teaching Assistants, advising on their personal development and ensuring
that that they are meeting the standards required. Plan and manage own teaching and tutorials as agreed with Head of School.
Design/update modules in line with School’s teaching strategy.
Plan and prepare research outputs to meet necessary deadlines. Planning and Organising:
Where appropriate, prepare research proposals for submission for external funding.
Senior Lecturer:
Be involved in strategic planning for the School/work unit and may contribute to the University’s strategic planning process.
Senior Lecturer:
Plan and deliver research, teaching and consultancy or similar programmes and ensure that resources are available.
Senior Lecturer:
Contribute to the management of quality, audit and other external assessments. Resource Management Responsibilities:
Use teaching and research resources as required.
Co-manage, where appropriate, with grant holder external funding relating to research project.
Act as mentor for students.
Senior Lecturer: Contribute to the overall management of the School/work unit, in area such as budget and business planning.

 

Internal and External Relationships:

Member of School, Faculty and University committees relevant to their administrative duties.
Collaborate with other staff within School.
Involved in developing links or joining external networks to share information and ideas.
Contribute to the School’s outreach programme by establishing links with local community groups, schools, voluntary organisations etc.

 

 

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

Have or be about to obtain a relevant PhD (Lecturer).
PhD must be completed for appointment at Senior Lecturer.
A publication record in peer reviewed journals /conference papers/other forms of research output, appropriate to stage of career.
A research focus in English Language and Linguistics.
Ability to make a contribution to the Research Excellence Framework (REF), appropriate to stage of career.
Research interests that are sustainable and which complement or enhance research activities of the School.
Evidence of ability to earn external research income, appropriate to stage of career.
Experience of teaching at tertiary level appropriate to career stage. Ability to contribute to broader management and administrative processes.
High level of analytical capability.
Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Engagement in continuous professional development.
Ability to assess and organise resources.

 

 

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

PGCHET and/or membership of an appropriate professional and/or teaching body eg. HEA.
A research focus in at least one of the following areas: stylistics, critical linguistics, discourse analysis, pragmatics.
Experience of lecturing and examining as part of a team.
Experience of designing and/or delivering undergraduate teaching, postgraduate teaching and research student supervision in at least one of the following areas: general linguistics, stylistics, critical linguistics, discourse analysis, pragmatics.
Experience of community outreach activities.
