JOB PURPOSE:

To become an active member of a vibrant research team engaged in interdisciplinary studies on Ophthalmology & Vision Science. The Research Assistant will undertake a PhD studentship project in Ocular Immunology.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Enrol in a PhD by research programme and carry out the research and training activities specified by a personal development plan (PCDP).
  • Undertake basic research activities that may include laboratory experiments, critical evaluation and interpretation, computer-based data analysis and evaluation or library research in consultation with the research grant holder or supervisor.
  • Present regular progress reports on research to members of the research group or to external audiences to disseminate and publicise research findings. Write up results of own work and contribute to the production of research reports, publications and proposals.
  • May contribute to introductory courses, for example, on the use of research methods and equipment.
  • Carry out experimental research leading to a PhD qualification.
  • Carry out the research and training activities specified by a personal development plan (PDP).
  • Carry out routine administrative duties as requested, e.g. arranging research group meetings, maintaining research group website.
  • Read academic papers, journals and textbooks to keep abreast of developments.
  • Carry out any other duties designated by a line manager and which fall within the general ambit of the post.
  • Produce regular reports to various stakeholders as required.
  • Assist in the planning and organisation of summer schools, workshops, international conferences and outreach activities.
  • Act as a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Ambassador and visit schools to foster interest in STEM subjects.
  • Contribute to social media to promote the work. Planning and Organising:
  • Plan own day-to-day activity within the framework of the agreed research programme.
  • Contribute to the planning of research projects, reports and publications etc usually 1-6 months in advance.
  • Make effective use of planned secondments.
  • Maintain an updated Personal Career Development Plan (PCDP).
  • Contribute to the PDP development and regular updates. Resource Management Responsibilities:
  • Ensure research resources are used in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research.

 

Internal and External Relationships:

  • Liaise with research colleagues and support staff on routine matters.
  • Make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding and form relationships for future collaboration.
  • Attend and contribute to relevant meetings and training events.
  • Contribute to the School and project outreach programmes by establishing links with local community groups, schools, industry.

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

 

  • A bachelor degree with at least 2:1 distinction or equivalent in subject relevant to research activity.
  • Some practical experience of applying specialist skills and techniques in cell biology/molecular or immunology required for the role.
  • Sufficient breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within own area.
  • Administration of laboratory-related activities (preparation of SOPs, COSHH forms and attendance at laboratory meetings, etc.) Ability to contribute to method improvement where required.
  • Ability to organise resources, manage time and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to interact with research colleagues and support staff.
  • Ability to analyse and communicate effectively.
  • Willingness to contribute to the School and project outreach activities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication in English.
  • Demonstrable intellectual ability.
  • Be non-resident in the UK at time of appointment and must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their selection for this post.
  • Eligible and qualified for enrolment in the PhD programme at QUB. 1 Be willing to travel to programme meetings and present at conferences.
