JOB PURPOSE:

To be an active member of the research project team assisting in the planning data collection and analysis of a research study entitled Establishing a Clinical phenotype for cachexia in chronic kidney disease. This study is an HSC R&D Office funded Enabling Award study. The aim is to determine the clinical phenotype of cachexia specific to individuals with chronic kidney disease.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Assist in the co-ordination of a project steering group who will be centrally involved in the study.
  • Ensure that the study complies with the ethics and governance.
  • Design and refine data collection methods.
  • Conduct data collection in clinical site.
  • Lead data analysis of quantitative data using SPSS.
  • Present regular progress reports on research to members of the research group or to external audiences to disseminate and publicise research findings.
  • Write up results of own work and contribute to the production of research reports, publications and proposals.
  • Develop a proposal to NIHR for funding consideration with UK collaborators.
  • Prepare, often in consultation with research team, material for publication in national and international journals and presentations at international conferences.
  • Carry out routine administrative duties as requested, e.g. arranging research group meetings, maintaining research group website. Join external networks to share information and ideas.
  • Ensure research resources are used in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research.
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach programme by establishing links with local community groups, industries etc.
  • May contribute to introductory courses, for example, on the use of research methods and equipment.
  • Read academic papers, journals and textbooks to keep abreast of developments.
  • Carry out any other duties designated by a line manager and which fall within the general ambit of the post. Planning and Organising:
  • Plan own day-to-day activity within the framework of the agreed research programme.
  • Contribute to the planning of research projects, reports and publications etc usually 1-6 months in advance. Resource Management Responsibilities: Ensure research resources are used in an effective and efficient manner. Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research.

 

 

 

 

 

Internal and External Relationships:

  • Liaise with research colleagues and support staff on routine matters.
  • Make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding and form relationships for future collaboration. Attend and contribute to relevant meetings.

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • A relevant Degree.
  • Be a registered nurse/dietician or eligible to register to undertake the post.
  • At least 1 years recent relevant research experience in social sciences research.
  • Experience of conducting quantitative data analysis, including logistical regression.
  • Ability to contribute to broader management and administrative processes.
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach programme by links with industry, community groups etc.
  • Sufficient breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within own area.
  • Ability to contribute to method improvement where required.
  • Ability to interact with research colleagues and support staff.
  • Ability to analyse and communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrable intellectual ability.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources.
