WorldPop (www.worldpop.org), based at the University of Southampton, is seeking to recruit a researcher to support WorldPop research projects with Geographic Information Systems  (GIS) skills/tasks including: generating raster layers from satellite, generating raster layers from point data, generating summary statistics from polygon and raster, cartographic skills, as well as the handling of Survey data (such as DHS surveys).

The role will support multiple projects, with a primary focus on phase 2 of the Digital Financial Services project, led by Dr Tom Bird and Professor Andy Tatem. This project is a joint project between WorldPop University of Southampton and Flowminder.

Digital Financial Services project overview

We are interested in defining what factors limit uptake and delivery of Digital Financial Services (DFS) in Tanzania, in order to define the so-called ‘frontiers’ of the DFS landscape.  To describe these limiting factors, analyses are needed from both the supply and demand side to quantify the interactions between the two.  We will use existing data on DFS usage and supply in combination with high-resolution satellite data and locations of Agents from Financial service provider’s maps. The project is articulated around two phases.

Phase 1 consists in mapping and analysing the frontiers of DFS in Tanzania. The output will be a report on the determinants affecting demand and supply as well as a series of maps detailing their interactions (e.g. heat maps of potential agent profitability or expected mobile money uptake given underlying socio-economic data). The data underlying the maps as well as the report will be made publicly available. The final draft will be submitted by the end of December 2016.

Phase 2, consists in scoping and identifying collaborative opportunities with a mobile network operator (MNO) in order to build the backbone of a dashboard fed by their Call details records, transaction data and Phase 1 data. The arrangement with the potential MNO partner will be subject to a formal agreement to be entered into.  Phase 2 starts in October 2016, the first six months will be devoted to finding the right MNO partner and discussing the programme of cooperation. The dashboard will be developed over the next 12 months, subject to finding a suitable arrangement with a MNO partner.
